How to Use the Hoverboard

Added the PC controller input and remapping note, the southern-route unlock detail, and a table of every place the hoverboard is required
The hoverboard is a traversal tool in LumenTale: Memories of Trey that you ride to move around the world. It is activated with a single button prompt once obtained, and it is unlocked automatically during the main story. Which quest grants it depends on whether you chose the north or south route.
In game the board is called the Holoboard, and both names refer to the same item. It appears in your item list alongside the Holoken and the Lumen Crest. There is nothing to equip and no durability to manage: once it is yours, the button prompt works anywhere the board can be ridden.
Once the hoverboard is obtained, press the corresponding button prompt for your system to start hovering.
Platform | Input |
|---|---|
Nintendo Switch | Left Analog Click |
PC (Controller) | Left Stick Press |
PC (Keyboard) | Ctrl |
On PC only a handful of button assignments can be changed, from the Controls section of the System Menu. See List of All Controls for every input and Best and Recommended Settings for the rest of the options.
The hoverboard is unlocked during the main story. If you chose to go north, it is obtained in the hotel of the third city you visit.
Route | Unlocked During |
|---|---|
North | The Lagoon City main quest |
South | The City of Fire main quest |
On the southern route the board is handed over during the City of Fire quest in Altipetra, around the point where you register for the match with the city's squadron. Either way it arrives through main story progress, so there is no side quest to chase and no way to miss it.
The hoverboard is not just a speed boost. Several story beats and a number of collectibles are gated behind it, and most of them involve crossing water that cannot be walked.
Situation | What the Hoverboard Does |
|---|---|
Crossing open water | Lets you ride over seawater and sea routes that have no walkable path. |
Reaching Memorenia | Cross the sea from the beach in Area 13 to continue the story. |
Travel over the seawater from the Memorenia docks toward the islands in the northwest. | |
Memorenia temple back entrance | Reach the cave south of the temple by crossing the water beside it. |
Altipetra volcanic depths | Ride the slope down into the depths when the prompt appears. |
Hover west over the water to the small island holding the last torch. | |
Minube hunting | Colors other than yellow sit behind hoverboard access plus certain Holoken powers. |
Everyday travel | Speeds up overland movement across Talea. |
Because the tenth Costa Linda torch is the only one that needs the board, it is worth leaving that puzzle unfinished until the hoverboard is in hand rather than hunting for a route that does not exist. The same applies to All Minube Locations: the yellow Minube is reachable early, the rest are not.
For the other half of getting around Talea, see How to Fast Travel. Exploration covers the day and night cycle and weather that change what you find on the way, and the Beginners Guide collects the rest of the early-game basics.
