Rockstar has not announced an online multiplayer mode for Grand Theft Auto VI. No trailer, screenshot, storefront listing or press release describes one, and both console storefronts sell the game as a single-player experience that offers optional in-game purchases. Take-Two's own pre-order announcement of June 24, 2026 describes the game the same way. What exists instead is indirect evidence, none of it a product announcement: testimony given in employment tribunal proceedings that referred to internal playtest sessions, a granted patent, and executive remarks on earnings calls about the company's existing online business. This page sets out that evidence and marks where it stops. Checked September 23, 2026.
A second point is easy to blur with the first. Take-Two has confirmed that GTA Online, the online mode that launched alongside GTA V in 2013, will keep running after Grand Theft Auto VI ships. That is a commitment to keep supporting the older game. It is not a statement that Grand Theft Auto VI has an online mode of its own, and the two should not be read as the same claim.

In October 2025, Rockstar fired over 30 developers in the UK and Canada for alleged gross misconduct. The Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) accused the studio of union busting, and a preliminary hearing took place at the Glasgow Employment Tribunal on January 5, 2026.
During the proceedings, Rockstar's legal representative said that the fired developers had discussed a secret online mode in a private Discord channel. Specifically, an employee had sent a message claiming Rockstar did not want more than five people taking time off simultaneously because it made it harder to fill playtest sessions with 32 players.
Rockstar never sought reporting restrictions on this evidence, so the 32-player figure became public record. What the 32-player figure actually described, whether a lobby size, a test configuration or something else entirely, was never established at the hearing, and it has never been tied by Rockstar to any announced mode.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said during the Q3 FY2026 earnings call (February 3, 2026) that the existing GTA Online will continue to receive support after Grand Theft Auto VI launches. He was talking about the 2013 game, not about a new mode, and said he had every reason to believe Take-Two would keep supporting it because of the engaged community around it.
Zelnick also cited Take-Two's track record with parallel products. He referenced NBA 2K Online in China, where the company did not shut down the older online service when its successor arrived, and both stayed on the market. The comparison is about running an older online service alongside a newer product. It says something about how Take-Two treats GTA Online. It does not establish that Grand Theft Auto VI has an online component at all.
Take-Two repeated the same position at its annual meeting of stockholders on September 17, 2026, reiterating that Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player game releasing in November and that GTA Online will keep being supported after it launches. No multiplayer mode for Grand Theft Auto VI was announced there.

Take-Two projects record levels of net bookings in Fiscal Year 2027, the fiscal year covering the launch window for Grand Theft Auto VI. That guidance is a company-wide figure. Take-Two has published no revenue expectation attached to an online mode for this game, and its public guidance does not break one out.
Zelnick has also said that generative AI plays no part in how Rockstar is building Grand Theft Auto VI.
Take-Two holds a US patent (a Rockstar patent filing, granted October 24, 2023) describing a system for seamless merging and splitting of multiplayer sessions. The patent outlines technology for moving players around a virtual world during gameplay without unnecessary loading or stalling. A granted patent records a technique the company has the right to use. It does not name a game, and it is not a statement that any particular title ships with it.
When players move apart beyond a threshold distance, their sessions split. When players from different sessions come within proximity, their sessions merge. The patent notes that a larger virtual world needs more players in it to feel populated. It does not tie that observation to any particular game.
