Reconciled the weather section with Rockstar's September 2026 storm details: replaced the speculative weather-effects table with what Rockstar has said and what remains unconfirmed
Kayaking is a confirmed side activity in Grand Theft Auto VI and a first for the GTA series. The activity was revealed through official screenshots released by Rockstar Games alongside Trailer 2 on May 6, 2025. One screenshot shows a character paddling a kayak upstream through what appears to be the rivers of Mount Kalaga National Park with lush vegetation lining both banks. The inclusion of kayaking as a playable activity reflects GTA VI's expanded focus on water sports and outdoor recreation in the tropical Leonida setting.
Kayaking also appears in the free-roam activity montage of the Extended Look, the 26-minute gameplay showcase released on August 27, 2026. The Ultimate Edition includes a Crest Kayak, which the storefront copy lists among Jason's safehouse vehicles alongside a Dinka Enduro motorcycle.
The following details have been confirmed through official Rockstar screenshots and the game's marketing materials.

First for GTA: Kayaking has never appeared as a playable activity in any previous Grand Theft Auto game.
River setting: The official screenshot depicts a character kayaking through an inland river surrounded by dense foliage, suggesting that kayaking takes place on freshwater rivers and streams rather than open ocean.
Single-person craft: The kayak shown in the screenshot seats one person and is paddled manually, making it distinct from the motorized boats.
Upstream paddling: The character in the screenshot appears to be paddling upstream, indicating that river current is a factor in the kayaking mechanic.
A notable detail in the kayaking screenshot is the presence of a flood gauge near the waterway. This black-and-white striped vertical pole with numbered markings is modeled after real-world flood gauges used in Florida to measure water depth during storms and floods.
The presence of a flood gauge in an official screenshot may point to water levels that change with the weather. In a September 2026 magazine cover story, Rockstar said Leonida has localized storms, puddles and wet surfaces that persist after rain, and tropical storms and seasonal hurricanes. As of October 13, 2026, it has not said how often storms occur, how they affect gameplay, or whether rivers rise or roads flood, so any link between the weather and kayaking is unconfirmed.
Weather | What Rockstar Has Said | Not Yet Confirmed |
|---|---|---|
Rain | Storms are localized; puddles and wet surfaces persist after a shower | Whether rivers or waterways rise |
Clear weather | Dynamic cloudscapes range from clear skies to afternoon storm clouds with lightning | Any effect on paddling |
Tropical storms and hurricanes | They occur in Leonida, as in real Florida | How often they strike and what they do to water levels or kayaking |
Flooding | Nothing stated | Whether roads or riverbanks flood |
The kayaking screenshot appears to be set in or near Mount Kalaga National Park, one of the natural areas in Leonida's interior. The Grassrivers region, which is based on the real-world Florida Everglades, is another likely location for kayaking given its network of waterways, swamps, and rivers. The Florida Everglades in real life are a popular destination for kayaking and canoeing, and Rockstar's recreation of this landscape provides a natural setting for the activity.
Kayaking is part of a broader expansion of water-based activities in GTA VI. The game's Florida-inspired setting provides ample justification for an emphasis on aquatic recreation.

Kayaking is one of the most popular recreational activities in South Florida. The Everglades, Ten Thousand Islands, and the Florida Keys all offer extensive kayaking routes through mangrove tunnels, open water bays, and freshwater rivers. Rockstar's decision to include kayaking in GTA VI reflects the studio's focus on capturing the culture and recreational identity of the region that Vice City and Leonida are based on.
