Grand Theft Auto VI has had one of the longest and most closely watched development cycles in gaming history. From early groundwork to a massive security breach and two release delays, the road to launch has been anything but smooth.

Work on GTA VI reportedly began around 2014, shortly after the release of GTA V on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Former Rockstar employees referenced the project on LinkedIn profiles during this period. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier published a detailed report in 2022 describing how the studio had undergone cultural changes following criticism of crunch conditions during Red Dead Redemption 2's development. According to that reporting, GTA VI's scope was initially even larger before being scaled back to focus on a tighter experience set primarily in and around Vice City.
On February 4, 2022, Rockstar Games posted to social media that "active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway." This was the first official acknowledgment of GTA VI's existence, ending years of speculation.
In July 2022, Rockstar announced that Red Dead Online would receive no further major content updates. The community widely interpreted this as a reallocation of development resources toward GTA VI.

On September 18, 2022, the largest leak in video game history hit the internet. A hacker posted approximately 90 in-progress development videos to GTAForums, showing early Vice City environments, character animation tests, and a playable sequence of Lucia and an unnamed male character robbing a Waffle House-style diner. The footage clearly showed a female protagonist, two playable characters, and the Vice City setting.
Rockstar confirmed the breach the next day, calling it a "network intrusion" and stating that it did not expect any disruption to development. The hack was attributed to the LAPSUS$ group. The individual responsible, 17-year-old Arion Kurtaj from Oxford, was found to have carried out the attack while on bail for a separate hack against Uber. He was deemed unfit to stand trial due to autism and was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order by a UK court in December 2023. A 17-year-old accomplice received an 18-month Youth Rehabilitation Order.
The first official trailer was scheduled for December 4, 2023, but leaked on December 4, prompting Rockstar to release it early the same day. Set to Tom Petty's "Love Is a Long Road," the trailer runs about 90 seconds and confirmed the Vice City setting, the dual protagonists (a man and a woman), and a modern-day time period. The trailer showed alligators loose in suburbs, NPCs recording events on phones, and sweeping aerial shots of a neon-lit cityscape. For a full breakdown, see the Trailers article.
The trailer became the most-viewed non-music video on YouTube in its first 24 hours. Tom Petty's "Love Is a Long Road" saw a roughly 37,000% spike in Spotify streams overnight.
Take-Two Interactive initially targeted a Fall 2025 release window for GTA VI, mentioned during investor earnings calls. On May 2, 2025, Rockstar officially announced the game would be delayed to May 26, 2026. The studio cited the need for additional development time to meet their quality standards.

Four days after the delay announcement, Rockstar released Trailer 2 on May 6, 2025. The nearly three-minute trailer primarily followed Jason Duval while also showcasing Lucia, Vice City, and several supporting characters. Rockstar confirmed all footage was "Captured on PS5."
Alongside the trailer, Rockstar updated the official GTA VI website with 70 new screenshots and written profiles for the game's protagonists and key supporting characters. The full names Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos were revealed here for the first time. Trailer 2 received over 475 million views across all platforms within its first 24 hours, breaking the cross-platform record previously held by the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer.
In late 2025, Rockstar announced a second delay, pushing the release from May 26, 2026, to November 19, 2026. The studio posted on X (formerly Twitter) and the Rockstar Newswire that "these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect."
During a February 2026 earnings call, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick reaffirmed the November 19, 2026 release date and stated that Rockstar's full marketing campaign for GTA VI would begin in summer 2026. As of early 2026, pre-orders have not opened and no pricing or special edition details have been announced. Zelnick also noted that Rockstar "will make more announcements in due time" regarding additional platforms, widely interpreted as a reference to a future PC release.
