Skill Gems

Added the three Skill Gem functional types (enhancement, weakening, buff) confirmed during the demo
Skill Gems are the build-customization layer of Embers of the Uncrowned, the system through which a player turns a generic class shell into a personal combat identity. The developers have positioned Skill Gems and the per-class skill tree as a paired system: the tree defines the broad shape of a class, and gems plug into that shape to bend it toward a specific playstyle. Together they are described as the core of build diversity.

Skill Gems are one piece of a four-system progression stack. Gems and the skill tree shape who the character is. Equipment and bloodline systems handle how that character scales.
System | Question It Answers | Relationship to Skill Gems |
|---|---|---|
Skill Tree | What is my class capable of? | Each class has its own tree. Gems slot into the framework the tree defines: tree as canvas, gems as paint. |
Skill Gems | How do I want to play my class? | The build-customization currency itself. Mixing gems with tree choices is what creates a unique build. |
How strong is my equipment? | Runs parallel to gems. Scales weapon and armor numbers, while gems scale how skills behave. | |
What ancient power do I unlock? | A late-game layer awakening a player's bloodline. Sits on top of the gem and tree foundation. |
Each of the three confirmed classes, Spectral Blade, Executioner, and Stormbringer, has its own skill tree, and gems are how a player adapts that tree to a specific role. Two players of the same class can pursue different fantasies, one leaning into burst, another into sustained pressure, another into group utility, by choosing different gems and tree paths in combination.
Build identity through gems feeds directly back into combat. The combat model rewards reading enemy tells, timing burst into stagger windows, and budgeting evasion; gem choices shape which of those jobs a build is best suited to perform. Visual personalization sits on a separate axis through character customization.
The Steam Next Fest demo confirmed how Skill Gems attach to skills. Every skill and every Skill Gem carries effect tags, and a gem can only be equipped to a skill if the two share at least one tag. When a gem is equipped, only the effects on the matching tags apply. For example, a gem with Physical and Wind tags equipped to a skill with Wind and Buff tags applies only its Wind effects. Holding Ctrl with the skill menu open shows how many effects each tag is drawing from equipped gems. Common effects are an exception: they can be equipped to any skill and are not shown under the skill tags.
Gems come in various grades and options that strengthen a skill, and the player obtains them while playing. Gems are crafted at the Workshop building in the settlement, and upgrading the Workshop allows higher-grade gems to be crafted. A gem's item details show which of its effects are currently active or inactive.
A developer update during the demo period broke Skill Gems into three functional types based on what their effects do:
Gem Type | Effect |
|---|---|
Enhancement | Boosts a skill's power or Critical Rate. |
Weakening | Lowers an enemy's Defense or the damage they deal. |
Buff | Improves resource efficiency. |
Higher-grade gems carry special effects that open the door to more powerful builds. Gems are crafted at the Workshop in the settlement, and harder content such as Dungeons gives a higher chance of obtaining them.
The demo confirmed the tag-matching rule, the grade system, and Workshop crafting. Some details remain undisclosed.
