A free playable demo of DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Withered World went out on September 9, 2026, roughly three months ahead of the full release. It is a bounded slice of the opening rather than a sampler: you play the story from the beginning until the events of the first region are finished, and the monsters you befriend along the way can come with you into the full game. Square Enix brands it PROLOGUE DEMO on its Western site and DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Withered World DEMO on the storefronts. Both names are its own.

What the demo covers
Square Enix words the boundary the same way on every storefront: the demo lets you play "from the start of the story up to the conclusion of events in Witherwood" while you get to grips with recruiting, raising and synthesizing monsters. The Japanese copy is more specific about what that means structurally. It says the demo runs until you clear the first region the protagonists reach, which it names カレキ地方, and which the English material calls Witherwood.
So the demo is not a time-limited trial or a walled-off tutorial area. It is the first region of the campaign, played normally, with the three core systems live: scouting, raising and Synthesis. The world beyond that region, including the second one, is not in it.
Square Enix also notes that the demo names a new way of recruiting that had not been described before it shipped, covered on Scouting and Recruitment.
Recruiting in the demo
Only rank G and rank F monsters can be befriended. That is the lowest two rungs of the nine-step scale described on Monster Families and Ranks, so the demo hands you the bottom of the roster and nothing above it. The restriction is stated in the same breath as the transfer rules on every storefront and in the official FAQ, which is the giveaway that the two are linked: the cap on what you can recruit is also the cap on what you can bring forward.
Bonus content cannot be claimed inside the demo. Purchase bonuses and add-on packs stay locked to the full game.
Carrying monsters into the full game
If you keep the demo save, you can move monsters into the full game. The rules are tight and each one is worth reading before you invest time in a particular creature.
Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
How many | Up to 8 in total, counting your active party and your reserves together |
Same platform only | Both the demo and the full game have to be played on the same platform. A demo save made on one system does not feed a copy of the game bought on another |
Same account | The save has to have been created with the account you will play the full game on, on that same console or PC |
Where they arrive | At the Depot, not in your party |
What resets | Level, talents, plus values and family tree all return to their initial states. Transferred monsters start again at level 1 with their default talents |
When you can use them | Only once you have progressed far enough in the full game to unlock the Depot |
What does not come across | Story progress, items and gold |
Two of those rows introduce terms the rest of the published material had not used. The Depot is the holding facility transferred monsters land in, and the family tree is a per-monster record that is wiped on transfer alongside talents and plus values. Neither has been described any further; both are noted on Monster Growth and Talents.
The practical reading is that a monster carried over is a species, not a save. You keep what you found, not what you built.
The Wrangler’s Bundle
Having demo save data also earns an item set in the full game. Square Enix calls it the Wrangler’s Bundle in English and 「冒険の続きセット」 in Japanese.

Item | Quantity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Ring of Impulse | 1 | An accessory. No effect has been published for it |
Bonus Ball | 1 | Multiplies experience and gold by 1.5 for the next 10 battles |
Smoked Sirloin | 5 | A meat item used when scouting monsters |
Bonus Balls and Smoked Sirloins also arrive in the purchase bonus sets on Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses, and both feed the recruiting systems on Scouting and Recruitment. The Ring of Impulse is the only one of the three that does not appear in any other published set.
Claiming the bonus, and a first-party wrinkle
The bonus is awarded when you start the full game, and it needs the demo save to be sitting on the same console or PC under the same account. What you actually press to trigger it is stated two different ways by Square Enix, and neither statement has been withdrawn.
Where it is stated | What it says to select |
|---|---|
The official FAQ | "Transfer Demo Data" from the title screen of the full version |
The store announcement for the demo | "Start New Game" from the title screen |
The Japanese FAQ | 「体験版を引き継ぐ」 from the title screen |
The Japanese wording matches the FAQ rather than the announcement, which makes the announcement the odd one out, but two of three is not a correction. Both English strings are recorded here as published until one of them changes.
Download size
The demo is a fraction of the full download, and the gap between the Nintendo versions and the rest is large enough to matter if you are short on space.
Platform | Free space required |
|---|---|
Nintendo Switch 2 | At least 5 GB |
Nintendo Switch | At least 3 GB |
PlayStation 5 | At least 15 GB |
Xbox Series X|S | At least 18 GB |
Steam | At least 17 GB |
Microsoft Store on Windows | At least 17 GB |
For comparison, the full PC release asks for 40 GB, which is on System Requirements. The physical Nintendo Switch 2 release separately needs at least 12 GB free for its first-play download, covered on Platforms and Versions.
Square Enix noted when the demo went live that the individual store listings would appear in sequence and could take a while to show up, so a store that had nothing on launch day was not necessarily skipping the demo.
What the demo leaves out
The Steam listing carries a shorter feature list for the demo than for the full game, which is the clearest published statement of what is switched off. The demo is single player. Multiplayer, player versus player, online player versus player, co-op, online co-op, cross-platform multiplayer, achievements and Family Sharing are all absent from it and present on the full game. The accessibility and controller options carry over unchanged.
None of the online features on Online Features can be tried in the demo, then, and neither can any of the paid add-ons on Downloadable Content.
Recording and streaming the demo
Square Enix published its usage policy for this game on September 10, 2026, the day after the demo went out, and it covers demo footage the same way it covers the full game. The spoiler embargo it sets is on a point well past anything the demo contains, so demo footage is not affected by it. The full policy is on Materials Usage Guidelines.
