Five characters have official profiles in DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Withered World: the two protagonists, Bianca and Nera, and three companions, Debora, Fluffy and Fizzy. A sixth, Scruffy, is named but has no profile.
Choosing a protagonist
Bianca and Nera are both protagonists, and you play as one of them. Square Enix has worded the arrangement two ways on its own channels. The Japanese copy says you choose one of the two when the game begins and adventure as her. The English copy says you can choose Bianca or Nera and then change characters on the regular, or stick with your favorite for the whole game. Both statements are first-party and neither has been withdrawn, so the exact rules for switching are not settled yet. The character you do not control has been described as still appearing over the course of the story, though her role has not been detailed.
The choice is not purely cosmetic. The once-per-battle Wrangler's Spirit produces different effects depending on which of the two you are playing, as covered on Battle and Party.
Bianca
A bubbly bundle of energy, in Square Enix's own phrasing: a bright, upbeat and reliable young lady from the town of Roundbeck who takes good care of her companions and always leads by example. Her Wrangler's Spirit heals HP and boosts attack power.
Nera
A picture of kindness and grace, from the town of Mostroferrato. She is described as a compassionate soul who tries to help at every opportunity. Her Wrangler's Spirit restores MP and raises defense. Her name is written Nera in English; the Japanese name is フローラ, which is why the Japanese title of the game reads as it does.
Debora
Nera's older sister, independent and willful. She marches to the beat of her own drum and is not afraid to voice her opinion, and though she rarely shows it, she cares deeply for her little sister. Yuji Horii confirmed on his own social account in May 2026 that Debora would appear in the game.
Fluffy
A mysterious yet dependable guiding hand. Fluffy is the strange being who visits Bianca and Nera at their bedsides, advises them on becoming monster wranglers, and can be relied on when they are stuck. The Japanese name is わたぼう, which Square Enix romanizes as Watabou on its Japanese site.
Fizzy
An oddball with a loveable streak, never spotted far from Debora's side, always on hand to dish out a few choice words of encouragement. The Japanese name is アゲぴぴ.
Scruffy
Scruffy is named by Square Enix as one of your companions from the game, alongside Fluffy and Fizzy, in the description of a Collector's Edition figurine set. The Japanese name of the same figure is ワルぼう. Beyond the name and that description, nothing has been published: no profile, no stated role, and no voice actor. The set is listed on Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses.
Voice cast
The game is voiced in English and Japanese, and the voice language can be switched from the in-game options. The five named roles are cast as follows.
Character | English | Japanese |
|---|---|---|
Bianca | Eva Feiler | Marina Inoue |
Nera | Kimberley Capero | Kana Hanazawa |
Debora | Rebecca Hanssen | Romi Park |
Fluffy | Caius Nicholas | Yoshino Aoyama |
Fizzy | Harriet Carmichael | Hina Suguta |
No actor has been announced for Scruffy in either language. Voice and text settings, including the language toggle, are covered on Languages and Localization.
Home towns
Roundbeck and Mostroferrato are the only two settlements outside the Kingdom of Witherwood that Square Enix has named. Both appear only as an attribution inside a character profile. Nothing has been published about either place, so neither has a page here. The setting as a whole is covered on Story and Setting.
Series background
Square Enix introduces Bianca and Nera as characters famously from DRAGON QUEST V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. That single lineage statement is the entire published connection. Their circumstances here, including the illness of their fathers and their meeting on the road, are specific to this game.
