Comprehensive Short-Haired Cat pet article with variants, trust items, equipment, and taming guide

The Short-Haired Cat is a cat breed that can be tamed and registered as a pet companion in Crimson Desert. It is one of several feline breeds found roaming the settlements of Pywel, recognizable by its sleek, close-cropped fur and compact build. The Short-Haired Cat comes in five distinct coat variants, giving players a range of visual options when choosing their companion.
Like all cats in Crimson Desert, the Short-Haired Cat is tamed by building trust through petting and feeding. Players must reach 100 trust before the cat can be taken in as a permanent companion. Once registered, the Short-Haired Cat follows you through the open world, automatically picking up loot from defeated enemies during combat encounters.
Short-Haired Cats can be found in settlements and towns across most regions of Pywel, with the exception of The Crimson Desert region itself. They tend to appear near buildings and market areas, often resting in shaded spots or wandering through streets. Their spawn locations may rotate depending on the time of day, so check back at different hours if you do not see one right away.
The Short-Haired Cat has five coat variants. Each variant is purely cosmetic and does not affect the cat's stats, trust requirements, or abilities. All five variants share the same trust items and equipment options.
Image | Variant | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Short-Haired Cat | The default variant with a standard grey coat. This is the most commonly encountered version in settlements. |
| Brown | A warm brown coat with subtle darker markings along the back and tail. |
| White | A clean white coat with no visible markings. One of the more striking variants. |
| Bicolor | A two-tone coat that combines patches of white with a second color. The pattern varies slightly between individual spawns. |
| Striped | A tabby-style coat with visible stripes running along the body and tail. The stripes are darker than the base fur color. |
Taming a Short-Haired Cat follows the same trust system used for all pets in Crimson Desert. You need to accumulate 100 trust with the animal before you can register it as your companion. Trust is built through two interactions: petting and feeding.
To pet a Short-Haired Cat, approach it and hold the interact button to pick it up first. Once you are carrying the cat, press the interact button again to pet it. Each petting interaction grants +5 trust. You can pet the cat up to five times per in-game day, earning a maximum of +25 trust from petting alone each day.
You can offer food to the Short-Haired Cat up to 3 times per in-game day. The amount of trust gained depends on the type of food offered. The cat's favorite food is Egg, which grants +35 trust per feeding. Standard food items like Fish, Bird Meat, and Fruit grant +10 trust each.
With optimal feeding and petting, you can earn up to +55 trust per in-game day (25 from petting + 30 from three Egg feedings that cap at the daily feeding limit). This means the Short-Haired Cat can be fully tamed in as few as two in-game days.
Once trust reaches 100, set the cat down if you are carrying it. Hold the interact button and select the "Take in" option that appears. The Short-Haired Cat will then be permanently registered as your pet and added to the Pets section of your inventory menu. You can register up to 30 pets total, though only one can be active at a time.
The following table lists all food items that the Short-Haired Cat accepts, organized by category and trust value. The cat's favorite food, Egg, provides the highest trust per feeding at +35. The Short-Haired Cat can wear cosmetic equipment purchased from Tailor's Shop vendors in Pywel. Pet equipment is divided into two slots: Helm and Outfit. These items are purely cosmetic and do not provide any stat bonuses or defensive benefits. Two pet equipment shops are available: one in Hernand (Porrorin Forest area) and another in the southwestern part of the City of Demeniss.
Item | Slot | Description |
|---|---|---|
Cat Plate Helm | Pet Helm | A small armored helm designed for cats. Gives your Short-Haired Cat a knightly appearance. |
Cat Plate Armor | Pet Outfit | A miniature suit of plate armor that fits over the cat's body. |
Peddler Cat Hat | Pet Helm | A wide-brimmed merchant's hat for your feline companion. |
Peddler Cat Outfit | Pet Outfit | A traveling merchant outfit sized for cats. |
Uniform Cat Hat | Pet Helm | A formal uniform cap that fits snugly on the cat's head. |
Uniform Cat Outfit | Pet Outfit | A neat uniform outfit for your Short-Haired Cat. |
Once registered, the Short-Haired Cat provides the same benefits as all other pets in Crimson Desert:
Auto-Loot: Your cat automatically picks up items dropped by defeated enemies during combat, saving you from having to manually collect each drop.
Resource Gathering: When you harvest materials in the open world, your cat helps collect nearby resources that you might otherwise miss.
Companionship: The Short-Haired Cat follows you while exploring Pywel, adding personality to your travels across the continent.
Short-Haired Cats can sustain injuries during combat encounters. An injured pet cannot run and will move slowly until healed. Use Healing Force Palm to restore your cat's health. You can also equip pet-specific armor from the Tailor's Shop, though this is cosmetic only and does not reduce the chance of injury.
If your Short-Haired Cat becomes injured and you do not have Healing Force Palm available, the cat will eventually recover on its own after enough time has passed. Keeping your pet out of prolonged fights against powerful enemies is the best way to prevent injuries.
You can speed up the taming process by crafting Companionship enchants on Abyss gear. The Companionship enchant increases the rate at which you gain trust with pets. There is also a Solidarity enchant that boosts trust gain with all NPCs and animals, including the Short-Haired Cat. Both enchants stack with normal trust-building activities.
Eggs are the best daily feeding item for the Short-Haired Cat, granting +35 trust compared to +10 from raw fish or bird meat. Stock up on Eggs before starting the taming process.
If you have a Legendary Fish in your inventory, feeding it to the cat grants +100 trust instantly. This can complete the taming in a single interaction if your trust is already at 0 or above.
The daily trust cap resets at midnight in-game time. Plan your visits to the cat's location around the day reset to maximize trust gain across two consecutive days.
Short-Haired Cats may not always appear in the same spot. If you do not see one, leave the settlement and return later. Different animals spawn at different times of day.
If your newly registered cat disappears visually after being taken in, try jumping into a nearby body of water. Submerging and resurfacing forces the pet model to reload.
You can register up to 30 pets total. Consider taming multiple coat variants of the Short-Haired Cat to switch between appearances.
The Short-Haired Kitten is the juvenile version of this breed. If you prefer a smaller feline companion, look for kittens in the same settlement areas.
