Rumors of the Greymanes is the first of seven quests in the Embers of Return questline, which itself sits inside the larger Grounds of the Sunrise Greymane faction chain. The chain tasks Kliff with tracking down scattered Greymane survivors and pulling them back to the Greymane Camp at Howling Hill.
Speak with Marius at the Howling Hill camp to trigger the opening dialogue. Marius shares the rumour that former Greymanes have been seen alive in the area and asks you to investigate the lead. No combat or travel objective is required before Marius will talk to you; he is the first person you meet after arriving at the camp for the first time.
Arrive at the Greymane Camp at Howling Hill.
Speak with Marius to hear the rumour about scattered Greymanes.
Accept the lead and return to Marius after the journal updates to close this quest.
The next quest, A Rumor at Hills of No Return, unlocks automatically.
Do not dismiss this quest as a throwaway conversation. Completing the full seven-quest Embers of Return chain unlocks the Freesword dispatch system, which is the single best passive resource generator in the game.
Prioritise starting this chain early. Delaying the Greymane recruitments pushes back access to the Cook, Quartermaster, and trading wagon services at camp.
