Overview

The Rhonid Large Shield is a large shield in Crimson Desert from the Rhonid regional line of equipment. It belongs to the Shields category and provides a base Defense of 6, offering solid frontal protection at the cost of reduced mobility. As a large shield, it covers more of the player character's body when blocking compared to standard round shields, making it particularly effective for absorbing heavy hits from powerful enemies.

The shield can be obtained in two ways: looted from a treasure chest inside a locked room on the second floor of Lioncrest Manor, or crafted at any Blacksmith after reading the Shields of the World, Vol. II crafting manual. For players exploring Hernand early in the game, picking up the Rhonid Large Shield from Lioncrest Manor is a straightforward upgrade that can carry you through several chapters before stronger options become available.

Stats

The Rhonid Large Shield has no innate bonuses to attack speed, movement speed, or critical rate. Its value lies entirely in raw defensive coverage. With two Abyss Core slots, players can socket cores to add passive effects such as Guard Stamina Consumption reduction, Damage Reduction, or elemental resistance to tailor the shield to their playstyle.

How to Obtain

Lioncrest Manor (Loot)

The most common way to acquire the Rhonid Large Shield is by looting it from a treasure chest inside Lioncrest Manor. The manor is located on the west side of Hernand, up a sloping path on a hill. It is the estate of Baron Adrian Alfonso of House Alfonso. To reach the shield, follow these steps:

1. Enter Lioncrest Manor. The easiest way in is to climb up the exterior wall and go through a second-floor window.

2. Once inside, head to the opposite side of the second floor. There is a locked door on this side of the hallway.

3. Find a key nearby. A key can be picked up from a tea table on the second floor, though taking it in view of NPCs may incur a bounty. Alternatively, keys can be looted from bandits or purchased from Back Alley Shops.

4. Use the key to unlock the door and open the treasure chest inside to collect the Rhonid Large Shield.

This pickup is available early in the game, and the shield might be a significant upgrade if you are still using a starter shield during the opening chapters. If you are already in the area for Bruna's Request or other Hernand side quests, it is worth the short detour.

Crafting (Blacksmith)

The Rhonid Large Shield can also be crafted at any Blacksmith once you have read the Shields of the World, Vol. II crafting manual. After learning the recipe, bring the required materials to a Blacksmith and forge the shield.

Iron Ore is gathered from mining nodes found throughout the Hernandian Territory and surrounding regions. Copper Ore is less common but appears at certain mining spots in the Hernand area. Both materials can also be purchased from material vendors if you prefer to save time.

Refinement

The Rhonid Large Shield supports up to 10 levels of refinement at a Blacksmith. Each level of refinement increases the shield's base Defense stat, making it progressively more effective at absorbing damage. Refinement requires materials (typically ores and metal ingots) and a small gold fee per level. At maximum refinement, the shield's Defense climbs well above its base value of 6, keeping it competitive into the mid-game even as stronger shields become available.

Abyss Core Customization

With two Abyss Core slots, the Rhonid Large Shield offers room for meaningful customization. Cores are socketed through the Abyss Gear system and provide passive bonuses while the shield is equipped. Some recommended core combinations for a large shield include:

• Fortitude I (Guard Stamina Consumption -3.0%): Reduces the stamina cost of blocking, letting you sustain your guard longer during extended fights.

• Aegis I (Damage Reduction 1.0): Provides flat damage reduction per hit, stacking with the shield's base Defense for stronger overall damage mitigation.

• Fortification I (Defense +3): A straightforward boost to Defense that pushes the shield's effective protection higher without any downside.

Players who invest in Guard Stamina Consumption reduction will find large shields like the Rhonid particularly forgiving, since the bigger frame already blocks more incoming damage and the core effect lets you hold your guard through multi-hit combos.

Combat Usage

Large shields in Crimson Desert block attacks from the front completely, covering a wider arc than standard shields. The Rhonid Large Shield excels in situations where you need to absorb heavy strikes from bosses or groups of enemies rather than dodge through them. Hold the guard button to raise the shield and lock onto a target, then release to counterattack.

The trade-off for this protection is reduced mobility. Large shields generally slow your movement while guarding, so you will need to be more deliberate about your positioning. Pairing the Rhonid Large Shield with a fast one-handed weapon (such as a sword or dagger) helps compensate for the slower movement by keeping your attack tempo high between blocks.

If you have unlocked parrying, you can time your guard raise just before an enemy's attack connects to perform a parry, which briefly staggers the attacker and instantly regenerates both stamina and mana. This technique is just as effective with a large shield as with a smaller one, and the Rhonid's generous blocking window makes it slightly more forgiving for learning parry timing.

Comparison to Other Shields

At DEF 6, the Rhonid Large Shield matches the Balton Large Shield in raw defense but comes from a different crafting manual and acquisition path. Players who want a direct upgrade in the large shield category should look for the Lifsoth Large Shield (DEF 8), which is found at the Witch's House in the Hernand region. For players who prefer mobility, standard-sized shields like the Shield of Conviction offer speed bonuses alongside solid defense at the cost of narrower blocking coverage.

Tips

• If you are heading to Lioncrest Manor for other reasons (Bruna's Request, the shot contest, or the strongbox puzzle), grab the Rhonid Large Shield while you are there. The locked room is easy to miss if you do not check both sides of the second floor.

• The shield is a solid early-game defensive option. If you find yourself struggling with tough enemies in the first few chapters, equipping it can make a noticeable difference in survivability.

• Refine the shield a few levels at a Blacksmith before moving on. Even two or three refinement levels add meaningful defense that extends the shield's usefulness.
