Expanded with detailed crime mechanics, bounty system, contribution penalties, livestock smuggling, and wagon theft
The Mask is a key item in Crimson Desert that allows Kliff to engage in criminal behavior. Equipping a Mask enables stealing items from shops, pickpocketing NPCs, poaching livestock, and committing other offenses throughout Hernand and the wider world. Without a Mask equipped, criminal actions are completely unavailable.

There are three ways to obtain a Mask in Crimson Desert:
The fastest method is to purchase a Mask from a Back Alley Shop. One is located southeast of the Church of Solumen in Hernand, on the eastern road next to the city, on the west side of the river near the Livestock Black Market. A goblin vendor near the mill sells Masks for approximately 10 copper coins. This is the simplest method if you have copper to spare.
The earliest guaranteed method is completing the Bounty Notice: Jeffrey quest in Chapter 2. Pick up the bounty notice from a lamp post in Hernand, then locate Jeffrey (a pickpocket wearing sleeveless clothing and a hood) in the east district. Tackle and defeat him, tie him up, carry him back to the Hernand Guard Captain west of Hernand Castle, and receive the Mask as a reward.
Bleed Bandits and other bandit enemies in the Hernand region occasionally drop Masks when defeated. This method is not guaranteed but provides an alternative source for players who missed the bounty quest or do not want to spend copper.
With a Mask equipped, you gain access to several criminal actions:
Approach a chest, dresser, shelf, or other container and hold out your Lantern (L1/LB). You will see a button prompt to steal the contents. Valuable items like jewelry boxes, paintings, and other objects can be taken from mansions and shops throughout the world.
Sprint into an NPC to bump them, then press the button prompt that appears to pickpocket them. Look for glowing coin pouches on NPCs, which indicate they carry valuable loot. Successfully pickpocketing adds the stolen item to your inventory.
You can poach animals by picking them up and carrying them to the Livestock Black Market to sell for extra coin. The Black Market is located near the Back Alley Shop east of Hernand.
Steal wagons by jumping onto and commandeering them, then drive them to a wagon fence to sell. One wagon fence is located east of Hernand, on the road leading south of the Halssius Apothecary.
Committing crimes in Crimson Desert carries several consequences through the crime system:
Most theft results in you losing -5 Contribution in the region where you steal. This penalty applies regardless of whether you are caught or not. Even perfectly executed thefts reduce your standing with the local faction.
When you steal, a red search zone appears on the minimap. If civilians within this zone witness the theft, they will alert the guards. Getting caught results in a bounty (typically 5 copper for minor theft). Higher-value crimes generate larger bounties.
You can avoid bounties by escaping the red zone before witnesses report you. If no one sees you commit the crime, no bounty is applied (though you still lose Contribution).
To pay off bounties and clear your wanted status, visit any church and select the "Buy Writ of Absolution" option. Pay the required fine amount to return to good standing. High bounties that go unpaid will trigger guard pursuit and potentially jail time.
The Mask occupies a separate equipment slot from helmets. Players can wear both a Mask and a helmet simultaneously, so wearing a Mask does not reduce your armor protection. The Blackwing Mask is a variant that provides the same criminal functionality with different cosmetic appearance.
Complete the Jeffrey bounty or visit the Back Alley Shop early in Chapter 2 to unlock stealing for the rest of the game.
Wearing the Mask in public draws suspicion from bystanders. Be aware of your surroundings before committing crimes.
The Mask and helmet use different equipment slots, so wearing a Mask does not reduce your armor protection.
Stolen items can be sold for profit at certain vendors, including Black Market dealers.
Every theft costs -5 Contribution whether you are caught or not. Factor this into your decision before stealing in areas where you need high reputation.
To avoid bounties, steal when no NPCs are nearby and escape the red zone quickly after taking an item.
Livestock smuggling and wagon theft are higher-risk but more profitable criminal activities than simple pickpocketing.
