Knowledge System

Rewrite with confirmed mechanics from Inven Global, AppTrigger, and GamingBolt previews
The Knowledge System is an alternative way to unlock skills in Crimson Desert. Instead of spending points in a menu, you go out into the world and find them. Pearl Abyss borrowed the concept from Black Desert Online's knowledge system but adapted it for a single-player action game.
When you enter a new area, you can perform a scan that gathers information about the region -- points of interest, quest leads, nearby resources. AppTrigger's preview describes it as gaining "knowledge and insight into completing quests." The more you scan, the more the map fills in with discoverable locations.
This is the part that sets Crimson Desert's progression apart from most RPGs. Inven Global's hands-on preview states it directly: "Certain skills cannot be acquired simply by spending resources; instead, players must personally witness and learn those skills in order to obtain them."
In practice, this means watching NPCs or enemies perform a technique and then unlocking it for your own use. The system suggests a large library of hidden abilities scattered throughout the world, discoverable only if you pay attention to what the people around you are doing.
Crimson Desert's dialogue system includes a "Threaten" option when talking to NPCs. GamingBolt's "15 Major Details" article flags this as a way to intimidate NPCs into giving up information -- locations, knowledge about abilities, or quest leads. The article also notes that using it could trigger consequences: a wanted status, reputation hits, or hostile reactions.
It is not clear yet whether Threaten is always available or only appears in certain contexts.
A related exploration mechanic involves finding hidden constellations. GamingBolt describes one example: "Observing a tower in the Steel Mountains" during certain conditions reveals a constellation that needs to be aligned with a counterpart elsewhere. The reward for completing these celestial puzzles has not been disclosed, but the system is likely tied to rare skills or Abyss Artifacts.
Worth noting: the overall progression system in Crimson Desert is gear-based, not experience-based. Producer Will Powers confirmed this in a preview: "Your level is gear-based, so there are smart ways of limiting how much you can advance your upgrade of your gear by changing the material requirements." Abyss Fragments raise core stats like health and stamina, while gear determines your effective power level. The Knowledge System sits alongside both of these as a third progression track focused on ability breadth rather than raw stats.
