Artifacts and Abyss Fragments
March 8, 2026 at 03:42 PM
Major expansion: added Abyss skill tree visual layout (wolf-head icon, color-coded sections), core vs branch node details, observation learning two-step process, Soul Spears, Abyss Remnants crafting material, Traces of the Abyss fast travel, and 8 fragment sources in table format
Abyss Fragments and Artifacts are the core progression system in Crimson Desert, replacing traditional experience-based leveling. Instead of gaining levels through combat, players grow Kliff's power by collecting Abyss Fragments scattered across Pywel. These fragments serve as currency for unlocking stat upgrades, new abilities, and extended combo chains within the Abyss skill tree. Pearl Abyss has described the system as central to how each player's Kliff develops differently, since there are no traditional classes.
Abyss Fragments are found throughout the world through a wide range of activities. The game encourages exploration and varied gameplay rather than grinding a single source.
Source | Description |
|---|---|
Boss Victories | Defeating world bosses and dungeon bosses yields significant fragment rewards. |
Abyss Trials | Completing trials within Abyss Dungeons provides fragments as completion rewards. |
Exploration | Hidden throughout caves, elevated areas, secret locations, and hard-to-reach spots across the open world. |
Quests | Story missions, side quests, and faction quests reward fragments upon completion. |
Liberating Locations | Clearing enemy-occupied camps, fortresses, and outposts rewards fragments. |
Overworld Fragments | Glowing Abyss deposits found in the open world. Some require using the sword's light reflection mechanic to reveal. |
Defeating Enemy Groups | Some enemy encounters in the wild drop fragments, particularly groups with stronger leaders. |
Commissions | Tasks assigned by NPCs in settlements such as Root Hold and other towns. |
The skill tree is accessed through the menu system (Start, then Progression, then Abyss Tree). It is structured as a web-like layout radiating outward from a central wolf-head icon, with interconnected nodes branching in multiple directions. The tree is visually divided into color-coded sections: blue, green, and red, each corresponding to different ability categories.
Node Type | Function | Examples |
|---|---|---|
Core Nodes | Increase fundamental stats directly | Health, Stamina, Spirit |
Branch Nodes | Unlock combat techniques, traversal upgrades, and special abilities | New combo chains, Crow Wings glide extension, special moves |
Each node requires a specific number of Abyss Fragments to unlock. Core nodes provide incremental stat increases that improve survivability and resource management. The three core stats each serve a different role: Health determines how much damage Kliff can absorb, Stamina governs physical actions like sprinting, climbing, dodging, and Crow Wings gliding, and Spirit fuels the use of Axiom Bracelet abilities and certain special attacks. Branch nodes unlock active abilities that expand combat and exploration options.
Not all skills can be unlocked simply by spending fragments. Certain branch nodes remain locked until the player has observed the technique being performed by an NPC or enemy in the world. This creates a two-step unlock process: first witness the skill in action, then spend fragments to learn it. This design prevents brute-force progression and rewards attentive players who pay attention to NPC behaviors during combat encounters. Even with abundant fragments, some abilities require exploration and interaction before they become available.
In addition to standard fragments, players can find Sealed Abyss Artifacts. These special items provide enhanced benefits beyond regular fragment spending, granting unique passive abilities, larger stat bonuses, or access to advanced skill branches. They are found in particularly well-hidden locations and as rewards for challenging encounters such as world bosses and Abyss Dungeon completions.
Soul Spears are a related collectible found at Ritual Grounds throughout Pywel. These act as additional progression items that complement the Abyss Fragment system, providing specialized upgrades or unlocking access to specific areas and abilities. Ritual Grounds are typically located in remote or sacred locations and may require solving environmental puzzles to access.
Abyss Remnants are crafting materials obtained from Abyss-related activities, distinct from Abyss Fragments used for the skill tree. These materials are used in the alchemy and crafting systems to create or enhance equipment. They represent the physical residue of Abyss energy and are sought after by alchemists across Pywel.
Players can refund and reallocate their Abyss Artifacts for a small cost, enabling build experimentation without permanent commitment. This reset capability allows trying different stat distributions and skill combinations. A player can rebuild from a stamina-focused explorer who spends more time gliding with Crow Wings to a combat-heavy fighter investing in Health and offensive techniques, or any combination in between.
Because there are no traditional classes in Crimson Desert, the Abyss skill tree is the primary mechanism for build differentiation. Pearl Abyss has stated that "no two players' Kliff will develop identically." Some players may prioritize Stamina for extended exploration and longer gliding duration, while others focus on Health and combat techniques for aggressive playstyles. Spirit-focused builds enable more frequent use of Axiom Bracelet elemental abilities. The weapon a player favors (whether melee weapons or ranged weapons), combined with their skill choices, creates the equivalent of a class identity without rigid restrictions.
Traces of the Abyss are fast travel points connected to the Abyss progression system. As players explore Abyss Dungeons and interact with Abyss energy throughout Pywel, they unlock these travel nodes. The Traces connect both the floating Abyss locations and the surface of Pywel, allowing quick traversal between discovered areas. These points expand the player's fast travel network as a natural reward for engaging with the Abyss content.
The fragments and artifacts originate from the Abyss, a mysterious realm described as "pure power, raw and untamed." The Abyss plays an important role in the story, with subtle foreshadowing that its power may threaten the balance of Pywel. Various forces throughout the continent seek Abyss power for their own purposes, creating additional conflict beyond the Greymane and Black Bear war. The growing instability of the Abyss sends fragments crashing into the world below, which is both a source of power for those who collect them and a sign of the larger threat.
