The Rapier is one of the three weapons available to the Ranger, and the only melee option in the class's kit. A Ranger who brings it pairs it with either the Bow or the Crossbow, and uses it for the part of a fight the other two weapons handle badly: an enemy already inside the Ranger's preferred range.

Why It Costs Nothing
Rapier basic attacks consume no class resource. That single property is what makes the weapon useful rather than merely available: when Vigor runs dry mid-fight, a Ranger on the Rapier can still deal damage and keep pressure on a target while the resource regenerates, which it does over time and through movement. A Ranger whose second weapon is the Bow or Crossbow has no equivalent free option.
The weapon also carries high evasion, so the close range it operates at is less punishing than the Ranger's armor would suggest. Nothing published restricts the class to a particular armor weight; see Armor.
Skills Recorded in the June 2025 Beta
Every name below comes from the June 2025 closed beta build and is recorded by a single guide desk. Chrono Studio has said that all classes will be re-evaluated for combat balance alongside the Matrix rework, so treat the list as a snapshot of that three-day test rather than as launch behaviour. No damage percentage, resource cost or cooldown has been published for any Ranger skill, so none is given here.
Skill | Type | Effect |
|---|---|---|
Mortal Thrust | Active | A burst attack that reduces enemy defenses. |
Counterattack | Active | Parries an incoming attack and retaliates with damage. |
Double Thrust | Active | A fast melee strike that helps trigger critical-hit windows. |
Crescent Slash | Active | Grants a stacking attack bonus. |
Piercing Blade | Passive | Grants a critical-hit bonus when the Rapier is drawn. |
Counterattack is the reason the Rapier is not purely a stopgap. It parries an incoming attack and retaliates, which turns a melee enemy's opening into a damage window rather than a reason to disengage. See parrying for how timed defensive counters work across the game.
Mortal Thrust is the burst piece and also a debuff, since it lowers the target's defenses, so beta rotations that dipped into melee tended to lead with it before swapping back out to a ranged weapon for the rest of the window.
Two Build Directions
The Rapier's skills split into two groupings rather than one line. One leans on critical damage, built around Double Thrust triggering crit windows and Crescent Slash stacking attack bonuses into them. The other leans on damage over time, which is the half that pairs with the Ranger's poison and burn effects from the ranged weapons.
Beta guides were consistent that the Rapier takes more work than either ranged weapon to reach comparable damage, and it was the least used of the Ranger's three weapons during the test. That is a statement about how players actually played, not a measured balance result.
Drawing the Rapier
Piercing Blade is a passive that fires on the draw, granting a critical-hit bonus when the Ranger switches to the Rapier. Paired with the Bow's Focused Draw, which grants a temporary attack boost on that weapon's draw, it means a Bow and Rapier loadout gains something on every swap in either direction. In the June 2025 build the swap carried no cooldown of its own; a short cooldown to prevent accidental double swaps is a stated change for the reworked build. See dual weapon switching.
Mastery and Matrix Paths
The Rapier has its own weapon mastery track, unlocked and raised by using the weapon, and independent of both character level and the Ranger's other weapons. Because a Ranger carrying the Rapier is usually spending most of a fight on a ranged weapon, its mastery tends to lag, which is part of why the weapon feels weak to players who have not invested in it.
The Matrix System adds four progression paths per weapon, twelve across the class, with each weapon supporting four distinct combat styles. It was not present in the closed beta build, and no Matrix path names have been published for the Rapier or for any other weapon.
