Overview
Chrono Odyssey is an action MMORPG developed by Chrono Studio, a subsidiary of NPIXEL headquartered in Gangnam, Seoul, South Korea. The game is published globally by Kakao Games, which provides comprehensive support in localization, marketing, and community engagement. Built on Unreal Engine 5, Chrono Odyssey uses fully action-based combat with no tab-targeting, a time manipulation system called the Chronotector, and a seamless open world set on the planet Setera. Setera is the last surviving world in a universe consumed by the Void, and the player takes on the role of a warrior sent back in time to prevent the planet's destruction.
NPIXEL previously developed Gran Saga, a mobile MMORPG. Gran Saga shut down on April 30, 2025, allowing NPIXEL to concentrate its resources entirely on Chrono Odyssey. The shift from mobile to PC/console development marks a deliberate change in direction for the studio.
Platforms and business model
Chrono Odyssey targets PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Mobile platforms (iOS, Android) were part of the original announcement in 2020 but were dropped during development as the team narrowed focus to dedicated gaming hardware. The game follows a buy-to-play model with no subscription fee. The cash shop is cosmetics-only. Kakao Games' executive producer stated three times in interviews that "no pay-to-win or enhancing items will be sold." Cosmetic offerings include weapon skins, mount skins, emotes, and a battle pass.
Classes and weapons
Six playable classes are planned for launch: Swordsman, Ranger, Berserker, Paladin, Sorcerer, and Assassin. The first Closed Beta Test (June 20-22, 2025) only had three of these classes available: Swordsman, Ranger, and Berserker. Paladin, Sorcerer, and Assassin are confirmed but were not playable during CBT1.
Each class has access to three weapons but equips only two at a time, with real-time weapon swapping during combat. Each weapon provides 8 available abilities, but only 4 can be active at once, so players must choose which abilities to slot for a given encounter. Mastery trees for each weapon unlock skills and passive enhancements over time. As an example, the Assassin wields a sabre, wrist blades, and a musket, and uses the Vigor and Bloodlust resource systems. The Berserker uses chainblades, twin axes, and a battle axe.
The combat system is fully action-based, with parrying, dodging, and manual aiming. Headshots on ranged attacks grant bonus damage. The game was originally described as featuring "18 unique job systems" when first announced, though the current class structure may have evolved from that original design.
Time manipulation
The Chronotector is the signature system. It is a time-manipulation relic that gives all classes the same five abilities: Temporal Tuning (reveals hidden details via a shockwave), Temporal Isolation (freezes enemies in place), Time Reversal (rewinds the player's position and HP), Temporal Resistance (slows enemies), and Summon (calls defeated boss Specters to fight alongside you). These abilities work in both combat and exploration, and some are restricted in PvP modes to maintain balance.
PvE content
PvE content spans several formats: Chrono Gates (solo boss encounters that unlock Specter summons), Labyrinths (solo puzzle dungeons built around Chronotector mechanics), Dungeons (3-player expeditions), Time Portals (instanced historical battles), Void Nexus encounters (5-player corruption zones), Field Bosses, World Bosses (100+ player encounters), and Raids (10-player endgame content). The bosses encountered in Chrono Gates are Void Apostles -- corrupted time entities.
PvP content
PvP is opt-in by default in the open world. Players must flag themselves for PvP combat before they can be attacked by other players. The dedicated PvPvE mode is Eden, an extraction-style experience where players fight both AI and other players for loot, risking everything if they fail to reach exit portals. Eden functions as an openly contested PvP zone where flagging for fights is automatic. The original 2020 announcement also mentioned "large-scale RvR battles," though the current status of realm-vs-realm content has not been confirmed.
World design
The game is set on the planet Setera (sometimes transliterated as "Satara" in some translations). The open world is fully seamless, using Unreal Engine 5's World Partition system to eliminate loading screens. The full launch map is four times larger than the CBT1 test region. Dynamic events change based on player activity, time cycles, and weather patterns. Post-CBT updates added a dynamic grass system and wind mechanics that respond to player movement, with scenic viewpoints at terrain transitions and themed caves with diverse exploration routes planned.
Lore
Chrono Odyssey is set in a universe created by Chronos, the god of time, who made twelve planets and distributed Arche (fundamental life energy) unequally among them. Eleven planets have been consumed by the Void, an ancient force awakened by the corrupted Sentinel Betelgeuse, the former Emperor of Magellan. Players take on the role of a Vanguard warrior who discovers the Chronotector at the Ruins of Time, is saved by the Sentinel Velia, and is sent one year into the past to change the future. The world's factions include the Frontier (a military force born from mercenary roots), the Sentinels (twelve semi-divine guardians), the Chronos Order (a religious organization), and the Broken/World Movers (Void-contaminated survivors from destroyed planets).
