Thalassa
September 21, 2026 at 11:52 AM
Added the land islands that surface and sink with the tide, and the official definition of how creatures and tamed 海巡兽 move through the sea
Thalassa is the vast sea that defines the world of Bringer. Official English copy describes it as "a vast sea formed by white solid particles" that "surges endlessly from north to south, leaving the lands beneath it fleeting and fragile". It is not water, and it does not sit still. Its constant southward movement is the reason humanity in Bringer has no permanent home.
Thalassa is the only place with an official English name. The official Mainland site's setting section names three more, 达卡斯, 蛋波 and 岩山城, together with the region 月洲 and the sea's two ends, 极天涯 and 大鸣渊, and the EP02 test notice of August 2026 adds the story milestone 海乱之礁. All of these exist in simplified Chinese only as of 21 September 2026.
Thalassa is one of only two world terms that the studio glosses inline in its own running prose, which makes the alignment below directly attested rather than inferred. The traditional Chinese page writes 由白色固態顆粒構成的淨海「Thalassa」, and the Korean page writes 탈라사(Thalassa).
Language | Form | Note |
|---|---|---|
English | Thalassa | Official English form. Use this. |
Chinese, traditional (overseas) | 淨海 | Glossed inline beside the English form |
Chinese, simplified (Mainland China) | 净海 | Same term, simplified script |
Japanese | タラッサ | Katakana transliteration |
Korean | 탈라사 | Glossed inline beside the English form |
Some Korean language coverage romanizes 淨海 as "Jeonghae", reading the characters rather than using the studio's own English term. That is a romanization of the Chinese name, not a separate place, and it is not the official English form. This wiki uses Thalassa throughout. See Titles, Languages and Regional Editions for the full glossary bridge.
Three properties of Thalassa are stated in official material, and nothing beyond them is confirmed:

It is made of white solid particles, not liquid. The composition is described only at that level of detail.
It flows from north to south, endlessly, and is described as surging rather than drifting.
The land beneath it is fleeting and fragile. Ground that Thalassa passes over does not remain usable, which is what removes the option of settling.
The consequence is stated directly in the game's premise. Because the land cannot be held, people live on the backs of the Arkiloth and keep moving. The prophecy attached to this is "Fall Behind, and Fall Away", written 不進則墜 in traditional Chinese, and the English site puts the same idea as a place "where to stop is to fall". Stopping is presented as fatal, not merely inconvenient.
The official Mainland site's setting section gives Thalassa a fuller description than any international surface. Translated: the pure sea is seen as the tears of the 白神, the White God, at once the current that drowns land and island and the foundation on which countless lives endure. White sand engraved with the ancient law, 应律, surges out of 极天涯 in the far north and flows without rest to the south, falling at last into the great abyss of 大鸣渊 and returning to nothing. It can be as calm as a mirror one moment and raise an all consuming storm the next. Sea creatures rise and sink through the torrent on arcs of 生物脉冲, bio pulse, while human civilisation rows against the current.
The same section names three places on or in the sea: 达卡斯, a city on the largest 隆舶 at the boundary of north and south; 蛋波, a village on a small 隆舶 in the southern region of 月洲; and 岩山城, a mobile fortress on a giant 隆舶. None of them has an official English form. Regions and Factions carries all four entries in full.
Two 净海探秘 posts from the studio's community account in August 2026 add what the sea does to land and how anything moves on it. Land islands, 陆岛, surface with the tides and sink without warning; they hold resources but are never a place to live, and the profession of tide scout exists to land on them inside a brief window. Creatures of the sea move through the torrent on arcs of bio pulse that resonate with the white sand; humans have no bio pulse, so they tamed the 海巡兽 as their transport, and the storefront copy lists 净海, 隆舶 and 陆岛 as the three ecologies the player will experience. So Thalassa is crossed, on a tamed creature, rather than only fled. See Regions and Factions.
Official material also speaks of the "tides of Thalassa", in the phrase "explore the tides of Thalassa" used in the game's official community channel description. That is the closest thing the record contains to a statement that Thalassa is somewhere the player moves across rather than simply a hazard in the background.
The player's own designation is built from this sea. Thalastrider, rendered 海履者 in Chinese, literally names someone who treads the sea. The reveal trailer narration addresses the player with the lines "Thalassa flows, and those who halt shall fall." and "Upon this Thalassa, where we coexist with Ancient Beasts.", which places the sea, the creatures and the player in a single relationship: coexistence, written 共生 in Chinese and Japanese, under permanent forward motion.
As of 21 September 2026 the following have not been stated anywhere in official material:
What the tears of the 白神 means literally, or whether the White God is a being in the fiction.
What the white sand engraved with 应律 is, beyond that description.
How crossing Thalassa on a 海巡兽 works in play, beyond the statement that the creatures race through the sand like the wind.
What lies in the 大鸣渊 at the southern end of the flow, beyond the statement that the sea returns to nothing there.
Whether Thalassa is natural, engineered, or the result of an event in the history of the world.
Any coast, island or structure beyond the four named on the Mainland site and the bare name 海乱之礁.
No official video released for Bringer shows Thalassa labelled or explained. The single cinematic on the global channel includes an aerial shot of wreckage and dark jagged shapes over a blue and white expanse, but nothing in the video identifies that expanse, so it is not treated here as a confirmed depiction. See Setting and Story for the surrounding themes.
