11Overview2233Koo is a magical white creature, described variously as a dog and a wolf-like creature, and the deuteragonist of Beast of Reincarnation. Despite being technically classified as a Malefact, one of the corrupted creatures that threaten the world, Koo forms an unbreakable bond with Emma and fights alongside her throughout their journey from the eastern countryside to the Capital.4455Koo's presence is constantly felt by the player's side through the game's command system. While Emma handles real-time sword combat, Koo battles by unleashing skills via commands, executing powerful abilities called Bloom Arts at the player's direction. This creates a hybrid combat system that blends fast-paced katana action with strategic command-based support.6677Appearance8899Koo is a white dog (described variously as a "dog" and a "wolf-like creature" in different sources) distinguished by a tail made of vines and branches. His tail specifically connects him to the Blight. It is a visual marker that sets him apart from ordinary animals and identifies him as a Malefact. His vine-tail mirrors Emma's vine-ponytail, visually reinforcing their shared Blight Power. Both carry matching vine-like markings that hint at a connection between them that goes far deeper than simple companionship.101011111212Origin and Bond13131414Koo is described as an abandoned dog that Emma encounters during her duties as a Sealer. His alliance with Emma is deeply unusual and paradoxical. As a Malefact, he belongs to the same category of creatures that Emma, as a Sealer, is tasked with hunting and destroying. The paradox of their partnership, hunter and hunted, Sealer and Malefact, is central to the game's narrative tension.15151616The official profile gives the partnership a cause rather than an explanation: Koo joins the journey because he and Emma resonated with one another. It also draws a line between him and the creatures he is classified with. Koo is described as a Malefact that has kept its own sense of self, where the rest of the corrupted have lost theirs, and the profile states outright that why a Malefact who ought to be her enemy follows Emma remains a mystery. Between fights he behaves like an ordinary dog, and is visibly pleased when Emma stops to pet him.17171818Their bond begins when Koo resurrects Emma during a fierce battle, causing a shakuyaku (Chinese peony) flower to sprout from her hair. This resurrection marks both the beginning of their partnership and the first of many flowers that will chronicle Emma's progression through the game. From this point forward, they are inseparable, traveling together from the eastern lands westward toward the Capital.19192020Like Emma, Koo carries great secrets. The nature of his Malefact existence, the source of his power, and the reasons behind his loyalty to a Sealer are mysteries that unfold throughout the story. The game emphasizes that every character carries heavy secrets, and Koo is no exception. He harbors truths hidden even from Emma.21212222Bloom Arts23232424Koo's special abilities are called Bloom Arts. These are activated through a command menu that can be opened at any time during combat using the Triangle button on PS5. When the menu opens, time slows but does not fully stop, maintaining tension while giving the player strategic breathing room to assess the battlefield and select the most effective ability.25252626Bloom Arts are powered by FP, which Emma earns through successful parries. This creates a direct connection between Emma's defensive mastery and Koo's offensive capabilities. Confirmed Bloom Arts effects include:27272828ItemDescriptionFire DamageDeals fire-elemental damage to a single enemy.Multi-Target Destruction: Delivers high destructive damage across up to four enemies simultaneously.Crowd ControlGroups enemies together, creating area-of-effect opportunities for Emma's attacks.Aerial LaunchMakes enemies "jumpable," launching them into the air for Emma's air combo attacks.PoisonApplies poison damage over time to affected targets.Aerial AssaultLaunches enemies skyward for follow-up attacks.2929Bloom Arts can be enhanced with mods that provide additional effects, such as HP regeneration per hit or FP generation against burning enemies. These mods allow players to create self-sustaining combat cycles. Director Furushima noted: "The command menu for Koo can be opened at any time, allowing players to move seamlessly between action and command-based combat. Through this flow, Koo's presence is constantly felt by your side."30303131The Command System32323333The command system is the primary interface through which players interact with Koo during combat. It represents the command-based half of the game's hybrid combat system. The system was designed to evoke what director Furushima called "the joyful dilemma of choice", a sensation he developed through his earlier work on command-based combat design. Players must decide which Bloom Art to deploy and when to deploy it, balancing immediate tactical advantage against saving resources for more critical moments.34343535Koo can also be directed to lead in and strike first before Emma engages, providing one of several tactical approaches to encounters. This flexibility ensures Koo is more than a passive support character but an active participant whose presence shapes every combat encounter.36363737Exploration38383939Koo is not only a combat asset. Director Kota Furushima has said that a great deal of work went into making Koo read as a living animal rather than a menu option, and that a specific part of that was giving him things to do outside battle: he finds items and picks out characters while the pair are exploring, acting on his own rather than waiting for a command. That autonomy is the practical expression of the design goal Furushima describes as making Koo feel like a creature that is genuinely there beside you.404041414242Passive Skills and Affection43434444In addition to Bloom Arts, Koo has passive skills that provide ongoing benefits during combat, such as stat boosts, damage resistances, or enhanced resource generation. The number of passive skill slots available increases as Emma and Koo's bond deepens, with a maximum of six slots achievable at full affection.45454646Affection is built through in-game interactions: feeding and petting Koo during downtime. This mechanic directly impacts gameplay progression, higher affection unlocks more passive skill slots, making the bond between player and companion a tangible gameplay system rather than a purely narrative element. The affection system reinforces the game's central theme of the relationship between a lonely woman and her loyal companion.47474848Skill Trees49495050Koo has three distinct skill trees that mirror Emma's: close-range combat focus, long-range combat focus, and stealth focus. The two characters' skill trees are designed to synergize, skills from one character's tree can enhance the other's effectiveness, encouraging players to develop complementary builds that reinforce their preferred playstyle.51515252Equipment53535454Koo can be equipped with Charms, his equivalent of Emma's Spirit Stones. These items provide unique effects and can be discovered through exploration. Charms allow players to further customize Koo's role in combat, whether emphasizing his offensive Bloom Arts output, his survivability, or his passive support capabilities.55555656Koo's Skill Tree57575858Koo's half of the tree is built on three main skills, and everything else branches off them. Emma and Koo draw from the same pool of Skill Points, so investing here is a direct trade against Emma's own nodes.59596060Main skillRequirementWhat it doesPounceStrengthLets Koo pounce on weakened enemies for an instant kill when told to run ahead. Each one attaches to a single Bloom Art and cannot be shared between two, so a mod build commits one art at a time. The full mod list is under Bloom Arts.67676868Rapport69697070Feeding and petting Koo raises rapport with him, and higher rapport opens additional passive skill slots. Version 1.0.7 capped the affinity-building conversations that could previously be repeated back to back, limiting them to once per day, so rapport now climbs across in-game days rather than in a single sitting. The same system runs separately for Kagura aboard the Walker.71717272Post-Launch Changes73737474Version 1.0.8 raised the damage and health recovery amounts on Bloom Arts, which is the most direct buff Koo has received since release. It also fixed a heavy performance drop when the End of the Line mod fired on Kiku: Bloom Strike. Version 1.0.9, on August 24, shipped the fix for Koo obstructing the player's field of view, which had been on the announced list since launch week. The same patch gave Koo-exclusive items their own distinct icons so they are easier to pick out of a shared inventory, and it corrected a desync where using his Emergency Medicine ability through specific inputs left the held count out of step with the number shown on screen. A display bug that made the FP icon and gauge flicker, when a parry landed during an enemy's continuous attack sequence with the gauge already full, was fixed in the same update.757576+Two later patches kept working on him. The August 28 update fixed a run of behaviour bugs: Koo blocking the field of view again, failing to walk over when the player interacted at a campsite, briefly landing in mid-air after attacking an airborne enemy, freezing after standing up if a fast travel happened while he was downed, and consuming items when departing the Cleanse Walker. The September 8 update stopped him flagging items and objects that had already been collected, which had been turning his scent marking into noise on a revisited zone.77+78+Two of his numbers also changed. The September 8 patch restored the missing display of his Pounce Rate, so the stat can be read rather than inferred, and it made enemy attacks cancel when a revival through Regeneration begins, which removes the case where the hit that downed Emma also interrupted the revive. His alternative skins became visible during cutscenes in the same patch, alongside Emma’s cosmetics.79+7680Narrative Role77817882The emotional bond between Emma and Koo forms the heart of Beast of Reincarnation. Director Furushima described his original vision as simply wanting to tell the story of a woman and her pet. Koo's presence transforms Emma's journey from a solitary quest into something warmer and more human, ironic, given that Koo is not human at all, and Emma herself struggles with what it means to be one.79838084The combat design reflects this bond at every level. Every parry Emma performs feeds into Koo's power through FP generation. Every Bloom Art Koo executes creates openings for Emma's attacks. The command system ensures that Koo's presence is constantly felt by the player's side, making him not just a companion character but a fundamental part of how the game feels to play.81858286Koo's paradoxical nature, a Malefact fighting alongside a Sealer whose purpose is to destroy Malefacts, raises questions about the nature of the Blight, free will, and whether corruption is truly irreversible. These questions deepen as the story progresses, intertwining with the secrets both characters carry.83878488The game's Japanese voice cast was revealed in June 2026 and the shipped credits carry no voice actor for Koo. He communicates through animal vocalisations rather than dialogue, so there is no role to cast.
