Dream Shards are the currency that exists only inside Somu’s Dream. They replace the items and experience Juno would normally collect in the waking world: inside the Dream, defeating enemies and smashing forageables and scenery pays out shards instead. In-game menus label them simply as Shards.
Shards are deliberately short-lived. They can be spent while the dive is still running, and whatever is left when Juno wakes is converted into Sleep Tokens, the currency that persists between dives. Nothing carries over as shards.
Where Shards Come From
Source | Notes |
|---|---|
Defeated enemies | The steady baseline income of a dive. Every enemy killed inside the Dream drops shards in place of its normal loot. |
Forageables and destructibles | Bushes, pots and other breakable scenery release shards. Bounty Rooms are packed with them and are the densest single source in a run. |
Objectives | Side objectives completed inside a Layer pay shards on top of the clear. |
Midnight Snack | A Perk that makes cleared Combat Rooms drop two or three small rewards, shards among them. |
Make it Rain and Treasure Goblin | Two Blessings that grant additional shards during a dive. |
Spending Shards
The only in-Dream sink is the Shop Room, where an immobile shopkeeper resembling Somu sells Blessings for shards. Prices scale with the current Depth Layer, so the same Blessing costs more the deeper a dive goes. Once the Shop Room is unlocked as a room type it spawns once per Layer, which makes a shard bank worth holding rather than dumping at the first opportunity.
The tension the system creates is simple: shards spent on a Blessing might carry the run deeper, and shards saved convert into permanent progress at the end. Spending nothing wastes the run’s power ceiling; spending everything gives up the meta-progression.
Conversion on Waking
When a dive ends, every shard still held converts into Sleep Tokens. Bonuses and penalties attached to how the dive went are then applied on top, and the total is modified downward if Juno leaves by any route other than the elevator in a Boss Room. The full payout table is on the Sleep Tokens page.
Planned Changes
Shard income is one of the systems being reworked in the 0.2.0 update. The studio is trialling risk-and-reward Blessings that pair a drawback with a much larger shard yield; the named example, Shard o’ Maniac, trades Strength for a far bigger shard return. Separately, the damage penalty that currently eats into a dive’s payout is being removed outright and replaced with a bonus for clearing combat encounters without being hit. A rework of the bonus system so that side objectives pay more at greater Depth has been confirmed but explicitly held back past 0.2.0. None of these numbers are final.
