True Qi

Added precise-defence gains, move-broken losses, the back-attack drain, and the name of the empty-bar state
True Qi (真气, Zhen Qi) is the central combat resource in A Whisper of Fall: Jinyiwei. Displayed on the HUD as 真气, it governs both offensive potential and defensive capacity, creating a feedback loop that defines every fight.
True Qi increases when the player lands successful attacks or performs parries (rebounds). It decreases when the player takes damage, gets parried by enemies, or has attacks broken. The bar ranges from 0% to 100%, with thresholds at both extremes that trigger specific mechanics.

Hands-on accounts of the 2026 builds describe the same two-sided ledger in more detail. The bar rises on landed attacks and on precise defence, meaning a well-timed parry or dodge pays out as much as connecting does. It falls when the player is hit and also when an enemy breaks one of the player's own moves, so a mistimed commitment costs the resource twice over: once in the damage taken and once in the technique that never landed. Draining an opponent works the same way in reverse, and the fastest route to it is positional. Getting behind an enemy takes a large amount of their True Qi at once, which is why the sword school's side-slip is worth more than the damage on the counter suggests.
An empty bar has a name. When True Qi bottoms out, the combatant falls into 散功, the dissipated state that leaves them open to a finisher. It applies to the player and to enemies under the same rules, and it is the state the whole exchange is built to produce in the other party first.
True Qi directly controls the maximum capacity of Inner Breath (息), the dodge resource. Inner Breath's cap mirrors the current True Qi percentage at all times. When True Qi drops to 50%, Inner Breath capacity halves. This creates a cascading risk spiral:
Player takes damage, losing True Qi.
Lower True Qi shrinks the Inner Breath cap.
Smaller Inner Breath means fewer dodges available.
Fewer dodges means more hits taken.
More hits drain True Qi further.
The only way to break the spiral is to go on offense. Landing attacks and parries rebuilds True Qi, which restores Inner Breath capacity, which gives the player room to maneuver again.
Threshold | Description |
|---|---|
100% (Full) | Finishing techniques (终结技) become available. These consume the entire bar but deal enormous damage. Described as dealing "extremely massive power." |
Above 50% | Inner Breath functions at full capacity. The player has access to their complete defensive toolkit. |
Below 50% | Inner Breath capacity is halved. Dodging becomes expensive and limited. |
0% (Empty) | The player is vulnerable to enemy execution attacks (处决), which deal massive damage. The player can also activate Gather Qi (集气) to channel and restore health, but this requires standing still and can be interrupted. |
Rebounds (parries) are the most efficient builder, returning noticeably more than a plain hit does. Hands-on accounts of the demo builds describe parry-driven recovery as the difference between holding a boss fight together and losing the exchange, though the developer has not published per-parry recovery values.
Regular attacks build True Qi at a lower rate. The martial arts style equipped affects how quickly True Qi accumulates. Faster weapons build through hit volume, heavier weapons through larger per-hit gains.
The system makes passive play untenable. Blocking does not build True Qi. Running away does not build True Qi. Only attacking and parrying do. The Gather Qi heal at 0% True Qi is a safety valve, not a sustainable strategy. Channeling is slow and interruptible. The game wants players fighting aggressively, reading attack patterns, and committing to parry windows.
Filling the bar changes how techniques are paid for. Techniques normally draw on True Qi, and because plain attacks return very little on their own, spending True Qi on techniques is where most damage comes from. Once the bar is full, techniques stop drawing on it and a martial ultimate (绝技) becomes available, dealing heavy damage and a large amount of stagger. That turns a full bar into a short window of free offence rather than a single stored attack.
