The combat system of Xenoblade Genesis has not been detailed. As of the June 9, 2026 reveal, the only footage is a short trailer that showed brief action, and neither Nintendo's official page nor the developers have explained how battles work. This page is intentionally thin and will be expanded once a proper gameplay showing happens.
What the Trailer Implies
Coverage of the reveal trailer frames battle around the special power called Anima: people sought to use Anima for warfare, and conflicts are decided by Anima and the Vesselai who can wield it. The Vesselai are shown fighting with swords set with a Crystone, the crystal said to amplify a wielder's power over Anima. These are broad impressions from the trailer, not confirmed mechanics.
What Is Not Confirmed
No combat mechanics have been confirmed. In particular, nothing has been announced about:
The moment-to-moment battle flow (real-time, turn-based, or otherwise).
Party size, party roles, or how characters are controlled in battle.
Any named systems, abilities, classes, or progression tied to combat.
Because Genesis is a new beginning for the series, the combat systems of earlier games should not be assumed to carry over. This wiki will not describe any prior battle system as confirmed for Genesis. For more on why Genesis is treated as a fresh start, see Series Context: How Genesis Differs From Xenoblade Chronicles.
For the powers and warriors referenced above, see Anima and Vesselai. For the game overall, see Xenoblade Genesis.
