Covens
May 16, 2026 at 07:07 AM
Initial version (2026-05-16): coven friendship layer
Covens are the structural friendship layer in Witchbrook. Every student at Witchbrook College belongs to a coven of fellow young witches moving through the same year together, and the player's own coven is a small fixed group of classmates the game places alongside them across the academic year. The coven shares lessons, group rituals, study sessions, and a steady rotation of shared events, and friendship within the coven runs on the same affection system the romance system uses. A strong coven is treated as a valid ending for the school year on its own terms.
Chucklefish has framed covens as the everyday friend group of a Witchbrook student, distinct from the wider population of Mossport. A coven gathers around a shared curriculum: members take the same classes, work through the same group rituals, and accumulate the same shared experiences over the course of the year. They appear together in classroom scenes, study together in the library, run errands as a unit, and turn up at festivals and seasonal events as the same recognizable cluster of witches.
Because friendships and romances run on the same underlying affection system, a coven also functions as the natural starting point for the romance system. Every confirmed datable character is also a coven member at launch: Hana Sato, Eli Ivers, Cormac Fitzroy, and Pip Marin all sit inside the player's own coven, which is why they tend to appear together across promotional material and in early dev blogs.
Field | Detail |
|---|---|
Size | Small, fixed group of classmates around the player |
Membership | Drawn from the same first-year intake at the college |
Sharing | Classes, rituals, study sessions, and seasonal events |
Friendship | Tracked on the same affection system the romance layer uses |
Romance | All four confirmed romance candidates are coven members |
End-Of-Year Outcome | A strong coven is a valid ending on its own |
Coven activity in Witchbrook is woven into the ordinary academic week. The studio has called out a recurring set of shared moments, including:
Shared lessons in the three magical disciplines, with the coven sitting through Alchemy, Divination, and eventually Arcane Arts together
Group rituals that the curriculum sets as collective work, where each coven member contributes a role
Study sessions and group projects between class meetings, used as bonding beats alongside class itself
Festivals and seasonal events around the city calendar described in seasonal cycles, where the coven turns up as a unit
Day-to-day errands around campus and town, with covenmates running into each other at shops, the editorial office, the harbour workshop, and the boardwalk
Friendship in Witchbrook is not a consolation prize for failing a romance. The studio has framed the friendship track as a first-class outcome, and a player who chooses to spend the year building close coven bonds without entering a romance is not treated as having missed an arc. Coven bonds deepen through the same combination of conversations, shared quests, and shared experiences the romance system describes, so the cost of attention is the same whether the player is courting a partner or anchoring a friendship.
Because covenmates are also potential romance candidates, the boundary between friendship and romance is porous. A coven member can stay a close friend for an entire school year, and the same character can become a romance arc on a later save without the studio framing the earlier ending as a failure. The studio has stressed that the colourful cast of the town is built for both friendship and romance, not just for dating.
Witchbrook supports four-player online co-op multiplayer, and the coven concept fits the multiplayer structure naturally. A four-witch co-op group can act as a player-driven coven, sharing classes, attending the same festivals, and running the same school year together. Because each player tracks their own affection with NPCs, two friends in the same save can pursue the same coven member on parallel tracks, and a group that wants to see every romance arc in a single year can simply assign one candidate per witch and compare notes at the end of the calendar.
