"Twist of Fancy" is the note that starts the Traveler's Journal Collection, a seven-note chain tied to Alexandre Exquemelin. The note is found in the first chest outside the tent at the starting-island Traveler's Camp. It points the player to a second buried chest hidden near the camp.
Open the visible chest outside the Traveler's Camp tent on the starting island. The chest contains the "Twist of Fancy" note, which becomes the first entry in the Traveler's Journal Collection.
Head west of the Traveler's Camp until you see a tall whitish tree stump with a red cloth tied around it.
Stand on the southwest side of the stump and dig. Sparkles appear in the ground before the chest fully surfaces.
Surface and open the chest. Loot is randomized.
A Shovel is required to excavate the buried chest. Craft one at the Workbench with 3x Copper Ingot and 10x Wood.
Loot at the buried chest is randomized. The primary payoff is the next note in the Traveler's Journal Collection, which continues the chain toward further treasures across the starting-island group.
Do NOT confuse this quest with Fifteen Men on a Dead Man's Chest, which has its own dig site triggered by a Blurry Sketch of the Island curio from a shipwreck.
Craft the Shovel before heading to the camp. There is nothing else to do at the stump without it.
Mark the stump's location with a Fast Travel Bell if you plan to revisit other Traveler's Camps in sequence.
