Part Three closes the Priest's Story. Itzeltek grants the priest's request, but the cost is darker than expected. Both father and daughter become guardians of the Last Gate, the joke that gives the quest line ('Jokes of the Gods') its name.
But long had the priest walked in faithful service, and the god's heart was stirred. He loosed them from his halls and parted the way that leads back to the light.
The father rose in joy, the daughter following in his shadow.
Then, all at once, the sound of splintering bone rang out behind him.
He turned, and saw his daughter's form break and swell, flesh twisting into the shape of a great crocodile.
Horror bound him fast, and the vast jaws closed over him as one.
Thus a new guardian was set at the Last Gate, and the laughter of Itzeltek lingered long among the marshes.
The closing line, 'the laughter of Itzeltek lingered long among the marshes', is the textual bridge between the Senkamati death cult and the modern game's swamp regions. The guardian of the Last Gate reappears throughout the Cursed Swamps as the crocodile-form Plague Crocodile, framed in-fiction as a descendant of the priest and his daughter.
Read together with The Priest's Story, Part One and Part Two, the trio explains why the swamp's crocodiles are tied to a death god rather than ordinary wildlife. The The Itzeltek Priest's Story retells the same priesthood, and the The Priestess's Tale extends the cult's story through the High Priestess.
The final part of the set, awarded by the Jokes of the Gods quest alongside Parts One and Two. It is a readable lore item that stacks up to 20 and has no combat or crafting use.
