Smugglers Main Base

The Smugglers Main Base (also called the Hidden Smuggler Base) is the faction hub for the Smugglers of Port Royal. It is a hidden cave on a small island within Smugglers Waters, identifiable on the world map by the green-striped water region. The cave entrance is not signposted from outside the island; the player must dock and circle the island to find it.

How to Unlock

The base is not accessible until the player completes part of the Underground Network quest chain. The chain begins after reaching Tortuga and finding a Letter to a Good Friend in a chest at a smuggler camp. Ask around on Tortuga (Long Ben in the tavern, behind the bar) for the initial lead; the chain then points the player to Marita inside the Smugglers' cave base, and from there out to a secondary contact (Hale) at an underground cave southeast of Blackbeard Waters.

Refitting the Ketch at the base through this questline unlocks persistent fast-travel to the cave and spawns the full NPC roster (Marita, Buyer, Bounty Agent, Provisioner) as permanent fixtures. Before that, the cave is effectively a quest encounter rather than a usable hub.

NPCs and Services

• Marita Suarez - faction contact and described as leader of the Smugglers. She stands at the back of the cave during the questline and becomes a permanent fixture after unlocking persistent access.

• Smuggler Buyer - stands to Marita's left. Accepts Contraband (150 Piastre), luxuries (250 Piastre), small silver items, native crafts, and higher-tier gold treasures (for example, Gold Mask of the Priest at 5 Guineas and Gold Vase of the Chief at 5 Guineas).

• Smugglers of Port Royal Provisioner - sells Conquistador and Pikeman armor plans, all three hull bracings, and all five Naval Tactics.

• Smuggler Bounty Agent - handles rep turn-ins for Smugglers of Port Royal.

Distinctive Economic Role

The Smugglers of Port Royal are the only faction that pays in Guineas for gold treasures. Windrose's premium currency comes primarily from this Buyer, which makes every gold treasure found in ancient chests worth routing here rather than to the Tortuga waterfront.

The Smuggler Provisioner is also the only faction that offers a Piastre-to-Guinea currency exchange, at an unfavorable rate. If the goal is to buy large Guinea-priced plans from the People of Tortuga Provisioner without farming Smuggler treasures directly, the exchange is the fallback option.
