The On Hands journal is the first of three Lost Cargo journal entries written by an unnamed crewman of Israel Hands. It documents Hands' deterioration after taking the artifact off Thomas Richards.

The captain's gone jumpy. Even after the wound he never did rein in his temper, but ever since he took that artifact off Richards, his head's sprung a leak.

He's always muttering under his breath in some unknown tongue, eyes wild. Even those closest to him are starting to keep their distance.

Still, I'll take him over Teach. Teach'll shoot you first, then haul you back up as an undead. Better to die proper.

'Teach' is Edward Teach, the historical name for Blackbeard, confirming that Hands' branch of the crew is uneasy with their nominal leader and prefers the broken-mind captain to the undead-raising one.
