The Diary Fragments are a three-fragment lore sequence written by Norman, a shipwrecked sailor stranded on an island with two crewmates, Bram and Mitchell. The three fragments span more than 105 days, from the wreck to Norman's eventual breakdown.
Cold. We've been ashore all day, and the rain hasn't stopped.
Bram says we should head into the jungle and take shelter in the ruins. I don't want to go. I keep telling them the ruins are cursed, but Mitchell laughs it off, and Bram doesn't believe me either.
I warned them the ruins are cursed. No sooner did we settle in than the nightmares began.
I dream my friends are dying. Their skin hardens into bark. Branches push out through their flesh. I wake up screaming. I'm afraid. I don't want to sleep anymore.
I carved protective charms for Bram and Mitchell. They laughed. Threw them into the mud.
Last night I heard them whispering about the boat. They're thinking of leaving me behind.
No, the 105th day was two weeks ago. Or was it three weeks? Cannot remember. I am lost.
Bram and Mitchell left me after all. Abandoned. Sailed away. Yes, they left. Sailed awa-a-ay. I stayed here. Together with their belongings. Over there. I buried it. I hid it until they come back. They will come back for me, right? They will. They surely will.
I left the ruins. It is even scarier out there. Far worse than before. Now I can hear their voices even in daylight. Like they are wafting form the grave. Thudding. They are coming. I can feel it. Where is my amulet? I need amulets. More amulets. They will protect.
Norman is the same character whose final note, the List of Essentials, survives in a separate cache. The diary's nightmares, in which skin hardens into bark and branches push out through flesh, describe in advance the visible decay pattern of corrupted Senkamati creatures, suggesting Norman picked up early signs of the Plague Marks corruption before Bram and Mitchell did.
The fragments are an in-fiction warning to the modern player that ruin shelter has a long-term cost. They sit alongside the island's other castaway records, such as Robinson's Diary Fragments, which tell similar stories of sailors who sought safety in the ruins and paid for it.
