Ascending Gear is the rarity-upgrade mechanic in Windrose. It takes a Rare (blue) weapon or armor piece and permanently converts it into an Epic (purple) version, unlocking a second passive effect slot and raising the item's base stats. Every ascension consumes one Tumbaga Ingot, which makes ingot supply the practical bottleneck on how fast a crew can push its loadout to the Epic ceiling.
Ascension runs through the dedicated workshop for the item type rather than the Upgrading Station. Weapons ascend at the Weaponsmith Workshop, and a weapon must already be leveled to level 8 at the Upgrading Station before the workshop will accept it. Cannons follow the same Rare-to-Epic conversion at the Shipwright's Workshop, combining the Rare cannon with a Tumbaga Ingot. On the armor side, the Armor Workshop's attachment line unlocks the higher-rarity recipes that feed the same ascension system.

The ascended item keeps its existing Rare passive and gains a second passive effect on top, along with an increase to its base stats. The new Epic passive is locked to that specific item: it cannot be swapped, rerolled, or transferred. Ascension is permanent, and the Disassembly Table will not refund the Tumbaga Ingot afterward, so ascend gear you intend to keep using rather than stopgap pieces.

Epic is the highest rarity accessible in the current Early Access build. Game data references two higher tiers beyond Epic that are not accessible to players, so the ascension track ends at Epic until a future patch says otherwise.
Tumbaga Ingots have no other use, so every ingot found is ascension fuel. They appear in Blackbeard Treasure Maps chests, as rare drops from the ruin dig spots scattered across the archipelago (the same Ancient Ruins locations that hold other rare-resource chests), and from map encounters.
