The Westlands
October 14, 2026 at 12:17 AM
Initial version (2026-10-14)
The Westlands is the world of Westlanders: a hostile Wild West inspired by 19th-century North America, where settlers try to make a home in an untamed valley. The developers have shown it only in pre-alpha material, and the region list for the first Early Access version has changed over time.
The reveal-era game page, written in late 2025, framed the setting through an entry from a survivor's journal. It opens: "Our dream was simple. Make the trip to the Westlands and find a place to call home." The writer describes a land that "gives with one hand and takes with the other", and an attack by outlaws: "the outlaws came in like a storm in the dead of night, leaving only fire, ashes, and a single survivor. Me." The entry ends with the survivor taking up the group's dream: "Now, the dream of my companions is my mission. Their legacy, my burden."
That premise text dates from the reveal period. As of October 2026, the Early Access notes on the Steam store page say story and quests are not yet implemented, so how the journal fits the final game has not been shown.
The store text describes a realistic open world that is "teeming with life and fraught with peril" and talks about building a network of settlements across the entire valley. The publisher's game page, current as of October 2026, says the Westlands are rich in biome diversity and that each zone has its own unique resources and dangers. Resource differences between biomes are covered on Workers and Production.
The publisher's page also promises lost secrets, the stories of those who did not make it out, and other survivors to meet along the way. The store text mentions hidden locations and unique characters.
Official materials have named the following areas. Dates matter here, because the Early Access region plan was tied to the Kickstarter Campaign and has not been restated since the June 2026 publisher change.
Area | What was said | When |
|---|---|---|
River biome | All visuals in the second developer blog were taken from it | February 2026 |
The game's first region | New places from it appeared in the first rifle video | February to March 2026 |
Lake Region | Described as a massive environment that Early Access would debut with | March 17, 2026 |
Lake & Forest Region | First playable biome in the Early Access plan, with or without Kickstarter funding | March 20, 2026 |
Foggy River Region | Listed only in the with-Kickstarter column of the Early Access plan | March 20, 2026 |
Mountain areas | Improvements listed only in the with-Kickstarter column | March 20, 2026 |
The March 20, 2026 chart also listed dioramas with loot: 8 without Kickstarter funding and 16 with it.
A February 2026 developer blog walked through scenes from the river biome. It described a waterfall in the high country spilling into a still lake, a ridge at the edge of a dense pine forest with a view across the land, and caves scattered across the plains, foothills and rocky ridges. Inside the caves, walls glitter with veins of copper, and wolves and grizzlies guard them. The blog called the wilderness "the main character" of the game. The dangers it poses are covered on Survival.
In a March 2026 developer blog Q&A, the team gave its goal for interactivity as "if it looks like it should move, it does." It said most foliage reacts to the player's movement and that destructible elements were added so the world feels reactive. The same Q&A said a dynamic lighting system makes areas feel different between noon and night.
The March 2026 Q&A said the team uses Unreal Engine's World Partition system, which lets it build a huge map prepared to expand through content updates with new areas, new biomes and more adventures. The January 2026 FAQ said the map is made mostly with internal Unreal Engine tools, with an external tool, Gaea, used for some map elements. More technical background is on Development History.

Whether the map is one seamless space (the March 2026 Q&A did not give a clear answer; not stated as of October 2026).
Map size (not published as of October 2026).
Named towns, factions or characters in the world (not announced as of October 2026).
How the survivor's journal premise connects to the final story (story not implemented as of October 2026).
