Survival is the first layer of Westlanders: before building a settlement, the player has to stay alive in a hostile wilderness. A February 2026 developer blog called the wilderness the main character of the game, and an unforgiving one. The game has not been released, so the systems below are planned or shown in pre-alpha material.
Named hazards
The current store text names frostbite, heatstroke, disease and wild animals as threats that could end the player's life. The publisher's game page, current as of October 2026, says each biome has its own dangers and lists waterborne diseases, bleeding bites and suffocating mines among them.
Hazard | Where it is described |
|---|---|
Frostbite and cold | Store text; publisher page; January 2026 FAQ |
Heatstroke and soaring temperatures | Store text; publisher page; January 2026 FAQ |
Disease | Store text |
Waterborne disease ("not-that-pure water" in the FAQ) | Publisher page; January 2026 FAQ |
Bleeding bites | Publisher page |
Suffocating mines | Publisher page |
Wild animals (wolves, grizzlies) | Store text; February 2026 developer blog |
Severe weather, such as torrential downpour | February 2026 developer blog; March 2026 press release |
Darkness at night | March 2026 developer blog |
In a pinned FAQ on the game's Steam discussion board in January 2026, the team answered a request to make nature as big an adversary as bandits. It said heat, cold, day, nights, animals and "not-that-pure water" will all affect the survival experience.
Wildlife
A February 2026 developer blog described wolves prowling around mineral-rich caves and said only players who can outwit the wolves and grizzly will be able to extract the copper ore inside. More on those caves is on The Westlands, and fighting animals is covered on Combat and Weapons.

Weather, day and night
The same February 2026 blog warned that a sudden torrential downpour can turn a peaceful trek into a perilous ordeal, and advised choosing routes carefully, carrying enough supplies and equipping for the dangers ahead. The March 2026 press release spoke of surviving brutal environmental conditions and severe weather.
A March 2026 developer blog said the team had implemented a dynamic lighting system, so the same forest feels different at noon and at night. Its advice was direct: "You’ll need to pack a light source!" The publisher's page sums up the cycle as every day a challenge and every night a test.
Skills and preparation
The March 2026 press release said players would manage specialized skills to survive brutal environmental conditions. The wagon is the main tool for preparation: the developers describe fitting it to the environment and stocking resources before a long trip.
Difficulty and custom settings
Replying in January 2026 to a December 2025 thread on the Steam discussion board, a developer said the goal for Early Access is to support several predefined difficulty modes, ranging from a more relaxed experience to hardcore survival, chosen when setting up a new game. The longer-term goal is custom settings, where each value can be picked individually. The reply gave day length and thirst and hunger depletion as examples.
In June 2026, a player asked for a peaceful mode or an option to turn off predator and bandit attacks. In September 2026 a developer replied that the goal across Early Access is to offer as much game customization as possible and that the request would be taken into account. As of October 2026, a peaceful mode has not been confirmed.
Current state
The Early Access notes on the Steam store page say survival is one of the core systems already in place, though the build offers a limited set of items, weapons, tools and crafting recipes. The game's survival mechanics, wagon customization and resource gathering were shown in a pre-alpha walkthrough in April 2026.
