Versus Mode is the competitive half of Virtua Fighter Crossroads, kept separate from the cinematic Story Mode. It preserves the traditional Virtua Fighter experience of one-on-one martial-arts duels and is built directly on the foundations the series is known for. SEGA officially refers to this one-on-one mode as Battle Mode, while much of the reveal coverage has also called it Versus Mode.
The mode is confirmed to ship with a full suite of both local and online options, letting players face friends on the same screen or opponents over the internet. It runs on the same Combat System as the campaign, so the fundamentals learned in the story carry straight over into competitive matches.
Confirmed Fighters So Far
The first Versus gameplay footage introduced three playable fighters, each with a distinct approach, and a fourth fighter, the Bakunawa Killer, was later added to the roster at Evo 2026. The full roster has not yet been detailed.
Fighter | Style Shown |
|---|---|
Mixed-martial-arts striker who scores takedowns and transitions into follow-ups | |
Pai Chan | A technical stand-up fighter who relies on whiff punishing and powerful launchers that lead into juggles |
Wolf Hawkfield | A heavyweight grappler who uses his size and devastating throw combinations at close range |
A masked newcomer who fights in a Shaolin kung fu style of butterfly kicks, palm strikes, and hands-behind-the-back attacks |
By splitting Versus Mode out from the narrative content, the game keeps a clean home for players who simply want to fight. The studio has emphasized that the underlying combat stays pure and readable, with the streamlined controls that define the series, making the mode approachable for newcomers while retaining depth for veterans.
The shared fighting system is also getting several teased changes that competitive players will feel directly, including damage that accumulates on individual body parts over a match and a bigger role for stun attacks that places less emphasis on long combos. These are detailed on the Combat System page and apply equally to one-on-one play.
Finer details such as the complete characters roster available in Versus Mode, ranked and casual online structures, and any training or spectator features have not yet been detailed. What is confirmed is that competitive play remains a core, fully supported pillar of the game alongside its story content.
