Kovir is a kingdom in the far north of the Continent, situated north of Redania on the Gulf of Praxeda. In the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, it was frequently mentioned as a wealthy trading nation but was never a primary setting. The Witcher IV marks the first time players can explore it.
The landscape shown so far includes rugged mountain ranges, dense coniferous forests, and a rocky coastline. The Unreal Engine 5 tech demo from June 2025 showcased Ciri riding through mountain passes and forested valleys before reaching a coastal settlement. The terrain is wilder and more sparsely populated than the war-torn Velen or cosmopolitan Novigrad from The Witcher 3.
Kovir is the largest exporter of mineral resources on the Continent. According to the books, it controls roughly 80% of the world's gold supply and is also known for its glass manufacturing industry. This wealth made Kovir politically neutral during many of the Northern Wars, as both sides depended on its trade.
Stromford is a remote village in the far north of Kovir, seen in the cinematic trailer. Villagers there practiced ritual sacrifice to appease a monster, suggesting frontier settlements far from Kovir's wealthy capital.
Valdrest is a port town shown in the tech demo. Ciri arrived there by horseback to take a witcher contract for an Imperial Manticore. It appears to be a trade hub with docks, market stalls, and a significant population.
In the novels, Kovir's historical capitals are Lan Exeter (the winter capital) and Port Vanis (the summer capital). Whether these cities appear in The Witcher IV has not been confirmed.
Kovir maintained its independence through a combination of strategic diplomacy and economic leverage. The kingdom's wealth in precious metals made it too valuable to conquer outright, as any prolonged siege would disrupt the economies of the aggressor nations. By the time of The Witcher IV, several years after the events of the third game, the political situation on the Continent has likely shifted further.
Kovir was referenced multiple times in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, primarily in the context of trade, banking, and as a destination for characters seeking political asylum. Triss Merigold briefly considered fleeing to Kovir at one point during the events of the third game. The kingdom appeared more extensively in Sapkowski's novels, particularly in The Tower of the Swallow and The Lady of the Lake.
