Tears of Metal takes place on a medieval Scottish island that has been overrun by a hostile invasion following a catastrophic event known as the Dragon Stone Meteor. The meteor's impact brought waves of occupiers and dangerous arcane powers to the island, forcing the native Scottish inhabitants to mount a desperate campaign to reclaim their home.
The Dragon Stone Meteor is the central event that sets the story in motion. Its arrival triggered the invasion that players must repel throughout the game. As players advance deeper into the campaign and complete special objectives, they gradually uncover more about the nature of the meteor and the mysterious powers it unleashed on the island.
Players command a Scottish battalion fighting to drive back the invaders. The soldiers in this battalion are not simply expendable units; they gain permanent skills through experience and become essential assets across multiple campaigns. Protecting veteran soldiers and building a strong battalion is as important as defeating individual enemies.
The game's environments are handcrafted battlefields spread across more than 45 locations on the island. The setting draws on medieval Scottish aesthetics with a stylized visual presentation. The island serves as both the narrative backdrop for the invasion story and the physical space through which players fight their way during each roguelike run.
