Stronghold 4 places its castles in a living, changing world. A day-night cycle and dynamic weather move across the map, and the terrain itself can change over the course of a game, so conditions are never fixed.
Weather is more than scenery; it influences how a settlement works. Snow can hinder the growth of crops, slowing the food supply, while heavy rain can reduce the effective range of archers in battle. Players have to plan around the seasons rather than ignore them.
The world also throws up in-game events that can disrupt or reshape a playthrough, giving each game a sense of unfolding story beyond the player's own decisions.
