The Shadow Plague

Created page on the Shadow Plague, the disease that defines the Infinite Coil and drives the campaign
The Shadow Plague is the disease at the centre of the STAR WARS Zero Company campaign. It is what makes the Infinite Coil more than another Separatist-aligned militia, and it is the reason Republic Intelligence contracts Zero Company to hunt them in the first place.
Official material describes it as a mysterious disease rumoured to grant unnatural resilience and deadly abilities. The hedging is deliberate and consistent: the game presents the plague through what people say about it rather than through a settled explanation, and the phrasing in official descriptions is "rumored" rather than stated fact. Nothing published names its origin, its method of transmission, or whether it can be cured.
The one hard fact about its distribution is unambiguous. Every member of the Infinite Coil is infected, including Kundri Fathom herself. Infection is not a mark of rank or a reward for service; it is a condition of membership.
The Coil takes worlds, and the plague spreads with them. Official descriptions tie the two together directly: the Coil preys on vulnerable populations across Republic worlds, and with every world they take the plague spreads and their ranks swell. That makes territorial expansion and infection the same process rather than two separate ones, which is why stopping the Coil is framed as a containment problem as much as a military one.
This is the premise the campaign is built on. Bennic Halloren, the Republic Intelligence officer who hires the company, is convinced the Coil poses a far greater threat than his superiors recognise, and the plague is the reason a comparatively small faction warrants that concern.
Kundri Fathom is described as embodying the plague rather than merely carrying it. What surrounds her is speculation: some claim she wields the Force, others insist she is a convincing charlatan. What is treated as certain in official material is that she is infected and that she commands the unflinching loyalty of the Coil.
The plague also has an effect on at least one figure outside the Coil’s human ranks. Typhon, a super tactical droid, is reported to have developed a fixation on the Shadow Plague and on Fathom as the woman who embodies it. A droid taking an interest in a disease it cannot contract is presented as strange in its own right.
Infinite Coil units are the ability-driven faction of the three the campaign fields, in contrast to the droid armies of the Separatist Alliance and the sheer numbers of the Outlaws. Against the Coil the order in which targets are removed matters more than raw damage output, because their dangerous abilities have to be shut down rather than absorbed. Factions and Enemies covers all three factions and how they are countered.
Because the plague is deliberately underexplained in published material, several obvious questions have no answer that can be stated as fact here: whether infection is voluntary, whether it is survivable, what its long-term effects are, and whether the resilience and abilities attributed to it are real or a story the Coil tells about itself. The wider Star Wars setting contains no shortage of superficially similar afflictions, but none of them has been identified as this one, and treating any of them as an explanation would be importing material the game has not confirmed.
