Even stranded and alone, Ro Laren carries iconic Starfleet equipment, and Star Trek: Shadow Frontier builds much of its gameplay around two familiar tools: the tricorder and the phaser.

The tricorder is Ro's instrument of investigation. She uses it to scan and analyze items and her surroundings, gathering the information she needs to understand the world and find a way through it. Scanning ties directly into exploration and investigation, where observation and analysis are rewarded over haste.
The phaser is Ro's tool for action. She relies on it both to solve puzzles in the environment and to fend off the creatures the planet sends against her. Its role in fights is covered in Combat, while its use on environmental puzzles makes it as much a key as a weapon.
Together, the tricorder and phaser frame the game's loop of scanning, solving, and surviving. They keep the experience grounded in Star Trek even as the setting turns to horror. No other gadgets or equipment have been officially detailed.
