Michael Hero is one of the companions who travel with Chigusa Choko. The publisher's English announcement copy introduces him simply as a companion, and he appears in the gamescom 2026 trailer as a mullet-wearing figure. The spelling above is the official English one; a misprint of it circulated after the announcement and should be ignored.

The game's announcement copy sets out the general rule that survivors met on the road can become companions who travel with Choko, and that characters encountered may join her or oppose her. Michael Hero falls on the joining side.

In the gamescom 2026 Demo

In the build shown at gamescom 2026, Michael Hero accompanies Choko in a wheelchair. Nothing in the demo explains why, and the studio has not commented on it. He walks with her through the opening section alongside Bubba, and back at the camp he has pitched a tent outside the RV, where the player can go and talk to him. One hands-on account of that build also described a side quest of his touching on childhood bullying and a childhood idol, which is worth noting only as something a single demo showing produced.

What the demo does not do is explain his backstory. It is better to say that plainly than to guess at it. See gamescom 2026 Demo for the scope of that build, which the developers describe as adjusted and unrepresentative of the finished game.

What Is Not Known

His origin, age, occupation, nationality and any relationship to Choko beyond companion are all unpublished, as are his abilities in Combat. A translated 2024 interview suggested that companions take part in fights in some special way rather than following the player around as persistent allies, but that statement is thin and has not been restated or demonstrated. He has been seen in Neo Yokohama and nowhere else.
