Sea Monsters
September 9, 2026 at 01:14 AM
Initial version (2026-09-08)
Sea monsters are one of the four features the developers lead with, and battling them is a named pillar of Sea of Remnants alongside exploration, crew building and island life. The framing is consistent across every announcement: take a fully armed warship out, face the creatures that roam the water, and claim the riches they guard.
Creature | What is known |
|---|---|
Giant bats | Described as lurking in dark caves. Named in the earliest feature list and repeated since. |
Cannon-wielding gorillas | Named in the same feature list. A pirate gorilla is also described as rising from obscurity in Orbtopia, which may be related. |
Treasure-laden giant crabs | Named in the same feature list. The treasure framing is explicit: the creatures carry what you are after. |
Leviathans | Described as descending through lightning and cloud, which places them in storm encounters rather than open sailing. |
Sea beasts | Described as shimmering beneath whirlpools. |
One named boss encounter has been published. The Mermaid Morian was the closing encounter of a 20 minute playable demo shown at gamescom in August 2026, faced after recruiting the lookout Hilda and the information broker Isabella on Echo Isle. See Crewmates and Exploration and Islands.
A separate demo build shown in June 2026 opened with a naval encounter against a kraken-like creature, fought from a large galleon under crimson lighting and thunderstorms. The creature was not named, and the sequence may have been scripted.
Beyond these, first party copy promises wildly imaginative bosses without naming any of them.
Monsters are the extraction step of the voyage loop made literal. The stated relationship is that creatures guard riches, so fighting them is how treasure enters the loop and comes back to Orbtopia to be spent. Memory currents are described as linking every sea monster lair to the rest of the world, which places lairs among the fixed points on the map rather than as random spawns.
The developers describe the game as being built on real ocean physics, creature behaviours and environmental systems. Creature behaviour being named alongside physics and environment suggests monsters are meant to act according to their own rules rather than as static encounters, though nothing has been said about what those rules are.
Monster encounters happen on both sides of the combat split. Land creatures are met in turn-based encounters ashore and in caves, while the larger sea creatures are engaged from a warship. Ship artillery is the tool for the latter, with three published tiers. See Combat and Ships and Fleets.
A bestiary of any kind. Five creature types and one named boss is the extent of what has been published.
