Comprehensive article on weapon categories, confirmed firearms, upgrades, and training range
Weapons in Rooted are divided into three distinct categories based on their origin and construction. Players can acquire and use salvaged weapons recovered from the ruins of the old world, futuristic weapons representing 2080-era technology from the pre-war period, and homemade weapons crafted from scavenged scraps. All weapons can be upgraded with collected materials, and weapon attachments are planned for future development phases.
Category | Origin | Description |
|---|---|---|
Salvaged | Recovered from ruins and abandoned structures | Pre-war firearms and melee weapons repaired through the salvaging system. Condition varies based on where and how they are found. |
Futuristic | 2080-era technology | Advanced weapons from the ROTOR era. Likely the most powerful category but also the rarest and hardest to maintain. |
Homemade | Crafted from scraps | Player-built weapons assembled from scavenged materials. Accessible early in the game but generally less powerful than salvaged or futuristic options. |
Two specific firearms have been confirmed through development updates:
M4A1: An assault rifle available through the salvaging system. Represents the type of military hardware that survived the collapse in varying conditions across the game world.
Glock: A pistol introduced in December 2025 as part of Alpha Phase 3. Its addition brought a sidearm option for players who prefer a lighter, faster secondary weapon.
In addition to firearms and melee weapons, players have access to hunting traps. These serve a dual purpose: they can be used for hunting wildlife as a food source, and they can potentially be deployed as defensive tools against hostile enemies. Hunting traps represent a passive approach to both resource gathering and combat, allowing players to set and forget rather than engaging directly.
Weapons can be upgraded using collected scraps and materials. The upgrade system connects directly to the salvaging loop: players dismantle items to recover parts, which are then used to improve existing weapons. Weapon attachments are planned as a future feature, which will add further customization options for modifying weapon behavior, accuracy, and handling.
A training range is located near the Mansion, providing players with a safe environment to practice shooting, test weapon handling, and familiarize themselves with new firearms before taking them into the field. The range serves as both a practical testing ground and a lore element, suggesting that the Mansion's previous occupants maintained their combat readiness.
The weapons system was moved to Alpha Phase 3 in part because of wildlife encounters. The addition of dangerous animals like bears and wolves required a firearms system that could handle hunting and self-defense scenarios alongside human and robot combat. Phase 3, which began in late 2025, introduced the Glock alongside hunting and fishing mechanics.
