Overview
Nightmare Shackles (噩梦枷锁) is the core capture mechanic of Season 1: Dark Night Collecting Light. It is the only way to encounter the eight Season 1 spirits and their 16 season-exclusive shiny variants. Triggering a Nightmare Shackles encounter requires a sustained capture streak in the overworld, and every successful break through the Nightmare Shield has a chance to produce a shiny spirit.

For the seasonal context, see Season 1: Dark Night Collecting Light. For the shiny rate and pity details, see Shiny and Variant Spirits.
Trigger Conditions
Reach the Season 1 content and unlock the Sleep Owl Sanctuary (眠枭庇护所) in the open world.
Consecutively capture 20 or more wild spirits within a specific area. The streak must stay within a single family or element pool to trigger the Polluted Spirit spawn.
After the threshold, wild encounters gain a chance to appear surrounded by a dark purple aura, indicating a Polluted Spirit. The trigger chance continues increasing as the streak grows.
The pity and trigger counters are tracked independently per spirit family and per element pool. Farming Demon Wolf streaks does not progress Big Ear Hat Bunny pity.
Breaking the Nightmare Shield
Polluted Spirits cannot be caught directly. They must be battled first so that the Nightmare Shield is broken. The shield functions as a second health bar with elevated defenses.
Enter combat with the Polluted Spirit.
Attack through the Nightmare Shield to break it. Only after the break does the spirit become catchable.
As of the April 2, 2026 patch, breaking the shield also purifies the spirit's Poison Mark and Starfall Mark, and makes it immune to burn, poison, parasite, freeze, and Starfall Mark for the turn of the break.
As of the April 16, 2026 patch, if the revealed spirit after the break is a shiny variant, a prompt appears in the top-right corner for two seconds and a shiny icon is pinned above the spirit.
Three Post-Break Outcomes
Outcome | Indicator | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
Reverts to normal form | Purple aura fades; spirit takes its standard color palette | Most common outcome |
Pollution Bloodline | Purple pollution aura remains after the break | Uncommon; grants the Pollution Bloodline variant with altered abilities |
Shiny variant | Spirit takes an alternate color palette with visible shine effect | Base chance 1.8% per break; guaranteed at pity |
Shiny Rate and Pity
Base rate: 1.8% chance per shield break, per spirit family.
Pity counter: 80 non-shiny breaks in a row on a given family guarantee the next break is shiny.
Per-family tracking: The pity counter is tracked independently for each family. Grinding one family does not affect the counter of another.
Capture success not required: Only the shield break counts toward pity, not whether the catch succeeded afterwards.

Pity Reset Behavior
Several actions reset the pity counter for the current family or element pool:
Crossing biome borders while a streak is active resets the current type pool.
Switching to capturing a different family or element type resets the matching pool counter.
Running out of MP mid-encounter or fleeing a Polluted Spirit battle commonly resets the counter. Community farming guides consistently recommend keeping MP topped up during shiny runs.
Logging out and resuming the next day does not reset the counter. The pity value persists across sessions.
Season 1 Shiny Farming
The community-standard farming rotation is the 3+3 method: capture three spirits of one type, then immediately rotate to three spirits of a different type, looping between the two to keep both type pools active simultaneously. This approach steers the Nightmare Shackles spawn towards the family pair you want to farm and accelerates shiny pity on both at once.
Because all eight Season 1 shinies close their wild capture channels when the 1.01 version launches in late May 2026, the Nightmare Shackles pity counter should be cleared on every family before the season swap. See the patch notes Upcoming Updates section for the 1.01 cutoff timeline.
