Mounts and Exploration

Initial creation of Mounts and Exploration article covering mount types, riding, gliding, fast travel, and paired exploration
Traversing the open world of Roco Kingdom: World is a core part of the gameplay experience. Players have access to three distinct mount types (water, land, and air), a universal gliding system, and fast travel points scattered across the map. Every rideable Spirit has unique riding animations based on its species, giving each mount a distinct personality and feel. Spirits that are too small to carry the player use a charming reversal mechanic where the Spirit rides on the player instead, sitting on their shoulder or being carried in their arms.
Roco Kingdom: World divides its mount system into three categories based on terrain. Each mount type is tied to a specific Spirit that must be captured or evolved before it can be ridden. The following table summarizes the three mount types and how to obtain them.
Mount Type | Spirit | How to Obtain | Ability |
|---|---|---|---|
Water Mount | Ducky (鸭吉吉) | Capture using stun mechanics in the wild | Allows traversal across rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water |
Land Mount | Big Skull Dragon (大头骨龙) | Catch in the wild through standard capture methods | Standard ground movement with increased speed across plains and roads |
Air Mount | Storm Bird (岚鸟) | Evolve Downy Chick into Storm Bird at level 30 | Full flight capability, allowing players to soar above the landscape |
Water mounts open up aquatic routes that are otherwise impassable. Land mounts provide a reliable speed boost for covering long distances on foot. Air mounts grant the greatest freedom of movement, letting players fly over mountains, forests, and other obstacles to reach any point on the world map. Unlocking all three mount types is essential for fully exploring every corner of the continent.
The Spirit riding system is one of Roco Kingdom: World's most distinctive features. When a player mounts a large Spirit, their character climbs on top and rides it in a manner appropriate to the Spirit's body type. A dragon-like Spirit might be ridden on its back, while a large bird-type Spirit carries the player between its wings. Each rideable Spirit has its own set of mount animations, turning the simple act of traveling into a visually engaging experience.
For smaller Spirits that cannot physically carry the player, the game introduces the "elves riding Roco" mechanic. In this system, the Spirit does not serve as a traditional mount. Instead, the Spirit perches on the player's shoulder, nestles in their arms, or floats alongside them. This reversal creates endearing visual interactions between the player character and their tiny companion. Each small Spirit has its own unique positioning and idle animations while being carried, adding personality to every Spirit regardless of its size.
The gliding traversal system is available to all players throughout the open world and does not require a specific Spirit or item to use. When the player jumps from a high point, they can deploy a glider to coast through the air. Gliding is the primary method for crossing wide gaps between cliffs, descending safely from mountain peaks, and covering horizontal distance without a flying mount.
While gliding does not provide the same freedom as a full air mount, it serves as a reliable tool for vertical traversal and is available from early in the game. Players who have not yet evolved their Downy Chick into a Storm Bird can still reach many elevated or distant locations by climbing to a high vantage point and gliding across.
Fast travel points are scattered across the world map as landmarks and waypoints. Once a player discovers and activates a fast travel point, they can teleport to it from anywhere on the map, cutting down travel time for frequently visited locations. These points are typically placed near major settlements, dungeon entrances, and key story locations.
The Magic Academy serves as the central hub of the fast travel network. It connects all major regions of the continent through teleport arrays, allowing players to quickly jump between distant zones. Returning to the Magic Academy is always an option, making it the natural home base from which exploration radiates outward.
Spirits are not merely passive companions while exploring. They exhibit weather-reactive behaviors that bring the world to life. During rainstorms, Spirits may seek shelter under trees or rock overhangs. On clear, sunny days, they bask in the warmth and display relaxed idle animations. These behaviors are cosmetic but add a layer of immersion that makes the Spirits feel like living creatures rather than game objects.
The day-night cycle also influences exploration in meaningful ways. Dark-attribute creatures only appear at night, making nighttime expeditions essential for players who want to complete their Spirit collection. The shift between daytime and nighttime exploration creates two distinct moods: daytime is bright and open, while nighttime introduces a sense of mystery as rare and elusive Spirits emerge from the shadows.
For players who enjoy exploring with friends, Roco Kingdom: World offers unlockable co-ride vehicles that allow two players to share a single mount. These dual-person mounts provide paired exploration, where one player steers and the other rides along. Co-ride vehicles are unlocked through multiplayer progression milestones and represent a tangible reward for social play.
In addition to co-ride vehicles, the hand-holding system (拉手同行) allows two players to link together and move across the map as a pair. While traveling in this linked state, the duo can trigger hidden story easter eggs that are only accessible through paired exploration. These hidden interactions include unique NPC dialogue, secret environmental events, and small narrative vignettes that reward players for exploring together.
The Magic Academy itself is a floating sky city, suspended high above the continent. Players access it via an airship that serves as both a narrative set piece and a functional transportation method. The airship ride to and from the Magic Academy provides sweeping views of the world below and acts as a visual reminder of the scale of the game's open world.
As the main hub connecting all world regions, the Magic Academy is where players return to train their Spirits, access shops and services, interact with key story characters, and use the teleport arrays that link to every major zone on the continent. The airship is the primary means of reaching the Academy for the first time, and subsequent visits can be made instantly through the fast travel system.
