Authentication and Appraisal

Created page: Authentication and Appraisal (2026-10-20)
Most goods that cross the counter in Probably Stolen come with a claim attached, and part of the job is checking it. Counterfeits, overstated values and mislabeled stock are common, and the store page states that if you misjudge the item or the person selling it, you absorb the cost. This page covers inspection guides, tools and the choice to pass off fakes yourself, based on official notes and pre-release screenshots.
The store description sets out item-specific checks. Cigarette packs need visual inspection before resale, water must be tested and filtered, and rare items need proper appraisal so you do not overpay. Suppliers overstate value, customers push their luck, and contraband often has problems you only spot after the deal is done. The store also lists authenticating rare goods and selling them for a profit as a core feature.
Pre-release screenshots show printed guides, three of them issued by the Station Trade Commission. Each explains what to look for on one product. Values shown in screenshots may change before launch.
Guide | What It Covers |
|---|---|
Hemingway Cigarette Authenticity Handbook | Four checks for fakes: lettering issues, logo issues, color issues (checked against a color card) and security seal issues |
Cybernetic Hand Appraisal Guide | Base value and minimum value, with the material (Aluminum Alloy, Carbon Composite or Gold Plated) affecting the price |
Ribwich Appraisal Guide | The packing facility number printed on the item decides its quality |
Water Trading Manual | Purity grades and how to test water. See Water Trading. |
Bloomberry Wine Fermenting Guide | Wine production. See Machines and Crafting. |
Dr. Jackson sells guides, including the water trading guide since Patch 48.3.10. Skip Intro mode starts you with the Immunivax guide.
Tool | Use |
|---|---|
Magnifying glass | Drag it over an item to check details such as lettering or a facility number |
Counterfeit Check | A panel with a Genuine checkbox and a Confront button |
Appraisal Service | Prepares a price for a customer's item, sent with Send Estimate |
UV filter | A tool that, since Update 049, cannot be used on items you do not own |
Scav Scanner | A scanner that can be upgraded with electronic parts until fully upgraded |
Gene Scanner | Shows animal allele colors. See Animal Farming. |
Aquascan | Scans liquid containers |
Water Testing Strip | A cheap, easy purity test for water |
Blue and red labelers | Labeling tools; the Blue Labeler can give containers a custom name |
Since Update 049, the Toolbox stores tools such as the labelers, and keys 1 to 9 equip them. Equip mode lets you use one tool quickly on several items in a row. Using a scanner brings its panel to the front, even when it was already open behind an item window.
Some customers come in only for an appraisal. You examine their item with the relevant guide and send an estimate through the Appraisal Service. Since Update 049, appraisal customers leave on their own once their business is done.
The Counterfeit Check panel has a Genuine checkbox and a Confront button. Confrontations go the other way too: customers can confront you over a wrong label, such as an incorrect water quality label. Update 049 fixed a case where a customer complained about the label on an empty container.
You can be the one passing off fakes. The store page says you can cut a product's quality, relabel counterfeit products as genuine or fence discounted stolen goods if you think Security will not reach you. It also lists profiting from the arrogant elite by selling them counterfeit goods as a feature. The risk is spelled out alongside it: mob justice, plus the Security pressure covered on Security and Contraband.
Since Update 049, offering mislabeled items to an aug no longer costs reputation; patch notes list this as a bug fix. Spotting augs is covered on Augs and the Rogue AI.
