Augs are people on the station whose AI chip went rogue and took control of them. They look like any other customer, so part of running the shop in Probably Stolen is watching for the signs and deciding when to draw your gun. Shooting the wrong person, or missing an aug, both carry consequences.
Premise
The store description says a sentient AI chip went rogue and took its hosts with it, and that Augs "look like everyone else ... until they don't." Every faction on the station agrees on the policy, and you have the gun to enforce it. The August 2026 announcement adds that rogue AI-augmented people live among the station's residents and secretly kidnap people, which is why the factions back a shoot-on-sight rule. The store's short description frames the job as stopping rampant AI by killing those it controls.
As of October 20, 2026, the developers have not explained where the chip came from or what the Augs want beyond the kidnappings.
Identification Guide
A pre-release screenshot shows a Security Department document titled Augmented Identification Guide. It splits the warning signs into visual and non-visual features:

Sign Type | Sign |
|---|---|
Visual | Visible aug chip |
Visual | Unusual pupils |
Visual | Uncanny expression |
Non-visual | Unnatural stillness |
Non-visual | Twitching |
Non-visual | Outfit not matching their faction |
Non-visual | Robotic vocabulary |
Non-visual | Overly formal phrasing |
The outfit check means customers belong to factions that you can read from their clothing; see Factions and Reputation. The same screenshot shows a customer card labeled Thief with the line "Initiating communication. I am a normal human." The guide's wording may change before launch.
Shooting at the Counter
Another pre-release screenshot shows a first-person view down the barrel of a pistol, with Shoot and Holster prompts. In that shot a customer labeled Lower Level Citizen reacts with "Hey, put that away!" Since Update 049, open item windows hide while you examine a customer or aim the gun, then come back unchanged afterward.

Not everyone can be shot. Patch 48.3.10 marked certain essential recurring customers as non-shootable, and Patch 48.3.12 fixed a softlock that could happen if you fired while a customer was leaving.
Hard Mode and the Augmented Ending
The game has an ending called Augmented that you reach by missing too many augs. Patch 48.3.10 limited it to Hard Mode, so on other difficulties you can no longer lose this way. Hard Mode tracks the danger with an Aug game over meter. Patch 48.3.12 fixed a bug where shooting an Aug on Hard Mode could still push that meter forward.
Players have tagged the store page with Multiple Endings, but as of October 20, 2026 the developers have not said how many endings there are or how they are reached.
Aug Scanner and Other Details
Detail | What Is Confirmed | Source Build |
|---|---|---|
Aug scanner | Sold by Dr. Jackson until Security declares the aug threat over | Update 049 (bug fix) |
End of the threat | Security can declare the aug threat over, after which the scanner is no longer offered | Update 049 |
Mislabeled goods | Offering an aug mislabeled items no longer costs reputation | Update 049 (bug fix) |
Essential customers | Some recurring customers cannot be shot | Patch 48.3.10 |
Hard Mode meter | Missing augs fills the Aug game over meter | Patch 48.3.10 and 48.3.12 |
The scanner is one of several scanning tools in the game; the others are covered under Authentication and Appraisal. How a player handles an aug can also overlap with Security's interest in the shop, which is covered in Security and Contraband.
Risk of Misreading
The store page warns that missing the signs, or misreading them, carries its own price. As of October 20, 2026, the developers have not detailed the full penalty for shooting an ordinary customer by mistake, so treat any community numbers on this point as unconfirmed until the 1.0 release on October 28, 2026.
