Pokemon Pokopia launched worldwide on March 5, 2026, as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. It was available both digitally on the Nintendo eShop and as a Game-Key Card, Nintendo's new physical distribution format for the Switch 2. Pokopia became one of the strongest-performing titles in the console's launch window, propelled by the Pokemon brand's global reach and overwhelmingly positive reviews.
Pokopia sold 2.2 million copies worldwide within its first four days on sale. Roughly 1 million of those units were sold in Japan, making it one of the fastest-selling Switch 2 titles in that market. The strong domestic performance reflected the Pokemon franchise's enduring popularity in Japan and the Switch 2's rapid early adoption. The milestone was reported by major Japanese and international gaming outlets.

Pokopia debuted as the fourth best-selling Nintendo Switch 2 title at the time of its launch, behind Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, and one other Switch 2 launch title. In Japan, it topped Japan's weekly software charts on release and held a top-ten spot for several consecutive weeks. Its opening performance was exceptionally strong for a spin-off title.
Pokopia is the first Pokemon title released in the Game-Key Card format, a new physical distribution method introduced with the Nintendo Switch 2. Game-Key Cards replace traditional cartridges with a small card containing a download code. Digital sales made up a significant share of total units, consistent with broader trends across the gaming industry.
A Pokemon GO Pokopia Celebration Event ran concurrently with Pokopia's launch window. The crossover raised cross-platform awareness of Pokopia among mobile players who had not yet picked up a Switch 2.
Strong reviews reinforced the commercial momentum. Pokopia holds a score of 90 (the highest ever for a Pokemon title on the platform) and a 98% recommendation rate from 81 reviews. Aggregate critical reception positioned Pokopia among the most-discussed Game of the Year candidates for 2026. The combination of critical praise, brand loyalty, and the Switch 2's growing install base positioned Pokopia for sustained long-term sales.
