Executioners was S-GAME's first 3D action game, moving the series from the 2D pixel art of previous mobile entries to full three-dimensional combat. Combat in Executioners is fast and responsive by mobile standards, prioritizing timing and positioning over stat-based progression. While the game includes gacha elements and live-service monetization common to the mobile market, the core combat loop is designed to reward player skill rather than power level. This combat-first approach was unusual for Chinese mobile games at the time and helped establish S-GAME's identity as a combat-focused studio.

The game functions as a prequel and side story rather than a direct lead-in to PBZ's narrative. However, the two games share factions, locations, and lore elements. Players familiar with Executioners will recognize references, organizations, and in some cases characters who appear in both games.
The live-service nature of Executioners has allowed S-GAME to gradually expand the shared universe over years of content updates, introducing new characters, factions, and storylines that flesh out the world that Phantom Blade Zero inhabits. Some of this expanded lore is reflected in PBZ's background details and NPC dialogue, rewarding long-time Executioners players with deeper context.
Beyond its direct commercial success, Executioners served as a critical proving ground for S-GAME's transition to console development. The game demonstrated that the studio could deliver satisfying action combat in 3D, manage a live-service operation, and maintain a player community over multiple years. These capabilities were prerequisites for the much larger undertaking of Phantom Blade Zero.
Executioners also generated the revenue that funded PBZ's early development, before the Tencent investment provided additional capital. Without Executioners' commercial performance, S-GAME might not have had the resources or the track record to attempt a console-scale project.
