Expanded souls article with orb physics, enemy absorption competition, Oni Armament feedback loop
Every defeated enemy in Onimusha: Way of the Sword leaves behind souls that the Oni Gauntlet absorbs. Souls come in three confirmed colours, each with a separate use.
Colour | Use |
|---|---|
Yellow | Replenishes Musashi's health. |
Red | Spent on upgrades. |
Blue | Fills the Oni Power Gauge and powers the Oni Armaments, the gauntlet's special weapons. |
Souls are not an abstract counter. They spawn as coloured orbs in the physical arena after an enemy dies, and they fade if they are not picked up in time. Soul absorption is an active tactical action rather than a passive cleanup: the player chooses the moment in a fight to break off and collect them, usually during a brief breathing window.
Capcom has shown that the Genma themselves can absorb souls. Stray orbs left on the battlefield will be taken by nearby enemies and used against Musashi, so leaving a kill's souls behind is not a neutral decision. Clearing up quickly is also a way to deny the Genma fuel.
Hitting enemies with Oni Armaments generates yellow souls on successful hits. The loop is: spend blue souls to activate a burst weapon, use that burst to collect yellow souls, stabilise health mid-fight. It is one of the reasons the combat stays aggressive rather than defensive.
Yellow souls are effectively in-combat healing. Scoop them up after a tough enemy to stabilise a health bar mid-fight.
Red souls are long-term currency for character progression and should be banked for the right upgrade rather than spent on whatever unlocks first.
Blue souls are limited. Using them on trash enemies wastes the Oni Armaments' damage ceiling, so they are usually saved for bosses or dense enemy groups.
