11The Oni Refuge is an otherworldly dimension in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and the first place the game takes Musashi Miyamoto once the story moves past its opening. Capcom lists it among the game's named locations alongside Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Mount Oe, Yasui Konpiragu Shrine and the underground laboratory. It is not a corner of Kyoto: it is a separate realm with its own rules, and it functions as the bridge between the demo's closing duel and the wider city campaign.2233Position in the Campaign4455The Oni Refuge picks up directly where the free demo ends. After Musashi duels the rival swordsman Sasaki Ganryu on the stage of Kiyomizu-dera, he is transported out of Kyoto entirely and into the Refuge. Players who finished the demo therefore arrive here with the fight against Ganryu still fresh, which is why Capcom has used this stretch to show off systems the demo did not introduce.6677Clearing the Genma out of the Refuge is what starts to lift the clouds of Malice hanging over Kyoto. The sequence is structured as a gate: the city does not open up until the Refuge has been dealt with.8899The Realm Itself10101111Capcom describes the Refuge as a surreal landscape where gravity is a suggestion. Islands hang unsupported in the sky and ruins are conjured out of thin air as Musashi moves through them, so the ground the player fights on is not stable in the way a Kyoto street is. Against that sacred, dreamlike scenery the Genma arrive as an intrusion, invading from the depths of hell and clashing with the setting rather than belonging to it.12121313That contrast is deliberate. The Refuge is the one confirmed environment in the game that owes nothing to real historical geography, which sets it apart from the rest of the location list where every major site has a real Kyoto counterpart.14141515What the Refuge Introduces16161717Two things the player carries for the rest of the game are introduced here.18181919Introduced HereWhat It DoesOni BowMusashi plucks the bow from the wreckage of the realm. It lets him answer Genma archers at range, solve environmental puzzles that need reach, and trigger traps. It later becomes a tool in boss fights back in Kyoto.DaidaraA towering Genma with a hulking frame and a bottomless appetite, first encountered in the Refuge. It eats the souls Musashi has not yet absorbed, which turns soul collection into a live tactical decision.2020Combat in the Refuge21212222The Refuge is also where the game's cutting system is put on display. When Musashi's katana connects with a Genma here, the creature is carved apart along the exact angle the blade travelled through it, splitting across the torso or opening up from head to toe. Capcom calls this dynamic dismemberment, and the floating, open arenas of the Refuge give it room to read clearly. See the Combat System article for how it fits alongside Break Issen and the parry toolkit.23232424Soul pressure works differently here too. Because Daidara consumes loose souls, the usual habit of clearing a room and then sweeping up the orbs at leisure stops being safe. The Souls article covers the three soul colours and the absorption loop the Refuge complicates.252526+Puzzles and the Bow27+28+Japanese material calls the realm 鬼の隠れ里, the hidden village of the oni. Its floating geometry is not only scenery. The Refuge is built with environmental puzzles that need reach, and the Oni Bow is what solves them: shooting a target across a gap, or one sitting where a katana will never land.29+30+The bow is handed over after a Genma fight inside the Refuge rather than found lying in the scenery, which means the puzzles that follow are the game teaching the weapon in the same breath it hands it out. The same tool then answers weak points and out-of-reach targets for the rest of the campaign, including against the shield-bearers and archers waiting back in the city.31+32+What Leaving the Refuge Unlocks33+34+Getting out of the Refuge is the moment the game opens up. Back in the capital, Musashi can roam Kyoraku freely, and the team has described that stretch of the city as far larger than anything shown in trailers or in the public demo. The Refuge is the hinge between the guided opening and the part of the game the player is trusted to wander.35+36+Side content arrives with the free roam. Random events call on Musashi to rescue townspeople caught out by the Genma, and clearing them pays rewards rather than advancing the plot. None of that is available while the Refuge is still in the way, which is why Capcom has framed the realm as a gate rather than a level.37+2638After the Refuge27392840Once the Genma have been excised from the Refuge, the Malice above Kyoto begins to thin and Musashi returns to the city. His next destination is Rokudo Chinno-ji Temple, which becomes the base of operations for him and his allies. The Refuge is not presented as a one-visit area in the marketing, but Capcom has not confirmed whether the player returns to it later in the campaign.29413042Status31433244The Oni Refuge is confirmed by Capcom's own pre-launch coverage and appears on the official location list. Its full size, the number of encounters it holds, and whether it reappears after the opening visit have not been detailed.
