Added comparison with soul absorption and soul-empowered enemies, plus the reconstructed Kyoto sites behind the vision system
11A Dark Mass is a manifestation of the combined resentment and negative energy left behind by people killed in a given place, and it is one of the named systems Capcom lists on its official location material for Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Dark Masses are found during exploration rather than dropped by enemies, which makes them the game's confirmed optional-lore layer.2233How They Work4455Musashi will occasionally come across a Dark Mass as he travels. Absorbing one into the Oni Gauntlet lets him see a vision of the past and learn about the suffering that produced it. The gauntlet is already the tool that pulls in Souls from fallen Genma; a Dark Mass uses the same absorption gesture for a different payload, trading a combat resource for a piece of history.6677Capcom frames the visions as glimpses of the past. What the player receives is context about an area, not a stat boost, so the system reads as environmental storytelling that the player has to actively opt into rather than something the game narrates unprompted.8899Where They Appear10101111Capcom has confirmed that the phenomenon can be observed at locations such as Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Because a Dark Mass is described as forming from the deaths that happened in an area, the natural expectation is that they cluster wherever the Malice has done the most damage across Edo-Era Kyoto, though Capcom has not published a full list of sites.12121313AspectWhat Capcom Has ConfirmedWhat it isCombined resentment and negative energy of those killed in an area, taking physical formHow it is usedAbsorbed into the Oni Gauntlet, the same way souls areWhat it givesA vision of the past, revealing the suffering that created the massConfirmed locationKiyomizu-dera Temple, described as one example among othersNarrative weightCapcom has said the visions may come to play an important part in what follows14+Dark Masses and Soul Absorption15+16+The gauntlet performs two different kinds of absorption and it is worth keeping them apart. Soul absorption is a combat action: coloured orbs drop from dead Genma, they are contested, and the payoff is health, currency or gauge charge. An enemy that reaches a loose orb first enters a soul-empowered state and fights harder for it, so leaving souls on the ground has a direct cost. Dark Mass absorption is an exploration action: the mass is already in the world before Musashi arrives, nothing competes with him for it, and what he receives is a vision rather than a resource. The gesture is the same. The economy around it is not.17+18+A City With Documented History19+20+The vision system has an unusual amount of real history behind it, because the game reconstructs actual Kyoto religious sites with the city's permission, and this is the first game granted that permission for these locations. One of them, Rokudo Chinnoji, serves as the base of operations. It is the site of the legend of Ono no Takamura, the courtier said to have travelled to hell through a well in order to serve its judge, and both the well he entered by and the well he returned through are reproduced in-game. Capcom has not published a list of which sites carry Dark Masses beyond confirming Kiyomizu-dera Temple as one example, but the research the team gathered on these locations is the same body of local history a past-vision system draws on.21+1422Why It Matters to the Story15231624Capcom has been unusually direct that this is not throwaway collectible content, saying the visions will perhaps come to play an important part in what is to come. That framing puts Dark Masses in the same category as the gauntlet itself: a supernatural power that starts as a curiosity and turns out to be load-bearing for the plot.17251826It also fits the wider design of the Oni Gauntlet. Oni Vision already lets Musashi perceive things ordinary sight misses, so a second gauntlet ability that reveals hidden history rather than hidden enemies extends the same idea from space into time.19272028Status21292230Dark Masses are confirmed on Capcom's official location material. How many exist, whether absorbing them grants any mechanical reward alongside the vision, and whether they are required for completion have not been announced.
