Max is part of the Magnolia squadron, one of the Lumen units stationed across Talea. As Trey's mentor, he introduces him to the work of the order: catching wild Animon with the Holoken, raising them, and using them in turn-based battles. His guidance is part of how Trey finds his footing in the early hours of the adventure.
Max enters the story during the Tourist quest. After Trey clears the Rubbish Rascals task by defeating the Smellwing and the leader Toxigall in the Scarlet Woods, he returns to Kapan's house and finds Kapan talking with a new character: Max. It is at this meeting that Trey receives news of a dangerous Animon, the Iotamor, lurking deeper in the woods, which sets up Trey's first boss battle.
The Magnolia squadron is one of several Lumen units organized across the two regions of Talea. Each squadron protects its area and supports the wider Lumen network, and Max's role places him in the chain of squadrons that include Costa Linda under Nipo and Voltar under Anne.
