Building and Customisation

Building is the part of LEGO Skylines that official copy actually goes into detail on. The rule the game repeats everywhere is that there are no instructions and only one requirement, which is that the result be yours. This page collects what has been confirmed about how that works. The city services side of the game is on Gameplay.

The central idea is the absence of a printed build order. Where a physical LEGO set gives a numbered sequence and a finished picture on the box, here the player decides what to make and where it goes. Official copy describes it as a sandbox for the player's wildest ideas, and as somewhere to build whatever pops into your head, get lost in the details, change your mind and build something else.
The customisation claim is deliberately broad. Asked what can be customised, the publisher's answer was effectively everything, with only imagination as the limit, and it promised more detail in future videos and developer diaries. On content, the stated range is buildings, plots, decorations and other customisation options, described more than once as an absurd amount of them.
Announcement footage shows how objects are positioned. The ground is a studded baseplate divided into square plots, and while something is being placed the grid is drawn on directly, with the valid area lit in bright green and the rest left neutral. Buildings sit on their own plots with room around them for paths, gardens, fences, sandpits and planting, so a plot is treated as a small piece of land rather than just a building footprint.
What that footage does not settle is granularity. It is clear that brick-built objects are placed onto a grid. It is not clear whether the player can also work at the level of individual bricks, and nothing official has addressed that question either way.
Two things have been said about size, and they need reading together.
The marketing line is unlimited space. The publisher's own more careful answer, given directly, is that each map has a set size to expand to, with the reassurance that a map fits far more LEGO buildings than a living room table would. Both statements are official. The honest reading is that maps are large and generous rather than literally boundless, and no map dimension has ever been published.
The development team has put the intended range in bricks instead. The game director described builds scaling from roughly twenty to thirty thousand bricks up to something on the order of ten million, and made the point that the appeal is doing that without needing the physical space at home. That is a statement about design scale rather than a hard technical limit, and it has not since been restated as a specification.
Everything is made of LEGO elements, scenery included. Trees are brick-built, rock faces are assembled from slopes and plates, water sits in tiled panels, and the ground itself is studded. Buildings use recognisable parts: tiled roofs, arched windows, striped awnings, railings, lamp posts and signage. Decoration extends down to small details such as flower beds, market stalls, garden furniture, picnic blankets, skate ramps and washing lines.
The announcement trailer's opening card states that the footage was built and captured in game, so the density visible in it is a reasonable guide to what the game can actually hold rather than a rendered promotional image.
A great deal. Nothing has been said about whether terrain, water or elevation can be edited. There is no information about how many maps exist, what they are called, or whether the differing environments seen in footage are separate maps, biomes, or simply regions of one large map.
Recolouring, colour palettes and which brick colours are available are all unaddressed. It is unknown whether buildings have interiors, whether creations can be saved, exported or shared with other players, whether any blueprint or gallery system exists, and whether the game will support modding. Whether any recognisable licensed LEGO sets or themes are reproduced in game has also never been confirmed.
