GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT is set in a brand-new Gundam timeline shared with the announced anime Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO through the RG Project, in a future where humanity has abandoned Earth and lives spread across the solar system after the arrival of the Apocalypse.

GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT takes place in a brand-new timeline that is not tied to any previous Gundam continuity. It is not a stand-alone pocket universe, though: the game is part of the RG Project, a Bandai Namco initiative in which separate works share one continuous world across generations. The game can be played on its own, and it is still built as an approachable starting point for newcomers, but its setting is shared with an announced anime that covers the same world at a much earlier point in its history.

The RG Project
The RG Project's world was created by director Kenji Kamiyama and author Toh EnJoe, who built the shared foundation that both works draw on. The anime, Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, opens the saga and is set roughly 100 years before the events of GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT. The game picks up generations later, in a future shaped by everything that happened in between, and the publisher describes it as an original story set beyond the events of the anime. The initiative was presented at a San Diego Comic-Con panel in July 2026.
Premise
Humanity faces the Apocalypse and must fight for its survival. Into this conflict steps RE-X, an ace pilot who answers the call to suit up for humanity. RE-X boards the high-mobility mobile suit Gundam Helix and joins a rag-tag crew of unsung soldiers in the struggle.
Before the Game: The Apocalypse
The shared history behind the setting begins with an Autonomous Interstellar Object that arrived from another galaxy and delivered three revelations to humanity:
Revelation | Effect |
|---|---|
Gravity Control | One of the three breakthroughs that opened the solar system to human settlement |
FTL Communication | Faster-than-light communication across the expanded human sphere |
Cognitive Materialization | The third revelation delivered by the Object |
Those breakthroughs brought an age of unprecedented prosperity and let humanity expand across the entire solar system. Less than ten years after its discovery, however, the Object ran rampant and spawned an aggressive, self-proliferating ecosystem. Humanity came to know that ecosystem as the Apocalypse. After three months of fighting it to a standstill in orbit above Earth, humanity was forced to abandon the planet, and that year was marked as A.A. 1, the first year After Apocalypse. Within decades, children born away from Earth had never known life without it.
That sequence is the shared foundation both works are built on rather than a timeline for this game specifically. The publisher has not given a year for the game's own story, only that it falls well after the anime. See The Unknown Threat for what the enemy actually is.
Where Humanity Lives
With Earth abandoned, humanity spread out. The space colonies and the Moon are where the first generations grew up, and Mars is settled too: the people living there are described as having their own way of life worth defending. Official copy places the fighting across the vastness of space and on a range of planets, so this is not a story confined to orbit.

The released screenshots fill in what that looks like. Two are set inside a vast roofed interior where sunflowers grow in cultivated beds across the floor, lit from above and framed by structural pillars, with the fighting spilling straight through the crop. Another looks along the outer hull of a station in orbit above a green-hued planet, an asteroid field drifting past and a built-up section visible further along the structure. A third is an open orange desert of sand and rock under a dust-hazed sky.
Powers and Factions
Three groups have surfaced so far, and they are strikingly different from one another.
Group | What Is Known |
|---|---|
The Trezoa Council | A governing body with a formal hierarchy of numbered seats and its own mobile suit forces, represented by knight commander Elaine Galath |
Red Grit | A band of sand pirates based on Mars, led by Big Paul, who hunt the Apocalypse and raid wealthy transports to redistribute supplies to settlers |
The Stellarvane | An independent special-duty vessel that carries out missions against the Apocalypse, captained by April Freeman |
None of the three has been given a full description yet, and the English forms of the Trezoa and Red Grit names have not appeared in the publisher's own English materials. See The Crew for the people attached to them.
Cast
Alongside RE-X, the story introduces the heroine Sofia Del Rio, who keeps watch over his actions, and the Haro assist unit Vii that accompanies him. The wider group is described as a rag-tag band of unsung soldiers, with more members still to be detailed.
Tone
The story is presented cinematically, weaving emotionally charged moments through fast and dramatic action. It has been described as a bold new chapter for Gundam, with more story details planned to be revealed ahead of launch.
